Pig Roast

Shropshire2Davis, on September 5, 2018 at 12:16 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 17

Would it be a good idea or a bad idea to pay for a whole pig and roast it for the wedding? We're having a relatively small wedding (currently 65-70 people on the invite list) and we live in rural Alaska and are trying to keep costs as affordable as possible, I plan on having a caterer, but want to have something different than just the standard wedding food...FH and I both love bbq, and most of the people we know could live off beer and bbq...I'm just not sure if it would be the right thing to do for a wedding...

BBQ is totally fine, but I would do regular catered BBQ. A roasted pig in front of you can be unappetizing for a lot of people.

I'm hoping people would be more interested in a whole, or even half pig roasting while we do the ceremony, I know I found it more appetizing seeing the whole pig when I went to my first pig roast but I see what you mean by it may be unappetizing to some...I still have time to figure everything out and I'm going to talk to FH and see how he feels about it.

I think that a roasted pig 🐖 would be a great idea. ^ is correct; while it may be unappealing to some it sounds as if that does not apply to you and/or your guests. Do what sounds good to you and your FH.

I was looking at prices for meat, that's why it popped into my brain to do a pig roast, at $4 a lb hanging for a whole or half pig, that's really not that bad for enough meat to feed 60-70 people...I'll still have to talk to FH and see how he feels about it since he's the one paying for the food, and is also on a special diet due to health reasons.

We did a pig roast for about 70 a few memorial days ago. We bought the pig locally. It was prepped already, and tell rented & towed the roaster. Since it was for a memorial day BBQ, we were able to devote the time to setting up and roasting. We were up at 7am to start, and it took about 7 hours to roast with constant watching and adding more coals. Plus once done, we had to transfer out of the roaster, and 4 ppl were pulling the meat.

Moral of my story, it is a GREAT draw and people love it because its unique, but unless you have family or friends that will take on the project of roasting that day, I recommend hiring a caterer. They all the equipment to set up, roast, and take down.

My FH wants a roasted pig too. We are going to ask our caterer what or bbq options are for our venue. I agree you should hire someone if you want to roast a pig. It would be fun, unique and a great idea!

What will you do for guests who don’t eat pork, or meat in general?

I plan on having more than just roast pig, my best friend is vegetarian and FSIL is vegan, so I will figure out things they can have as well but everyone else that I’ve talked to loves pork...

If you have guests there who are vegan or vegetarian they’re not going to want to see an animal carcass. I think it’s a really bad idea. I can also tell you as a pescatarian who changed my diet for health reasons, the smell alone would make me sick and I’d be walking out. You really need to know your guests because you’re hosting this party for them.

I love pig roasts. Is there a way to not have the pig displayed in front of your guests? Maybe that would help anyone with an issue of any type?

I'm half Filipino and we basically have a pig roast for every big event, so that sounds amazing!

Could you hire someone to tend to the pig all day? I've personally never done it, but I've seen it done and it seems to take a lot of work & require someone to pay attention most the day. If you have someone who can do that and doesn't have to be in or attend the wedding, then can carve & serve, I would do it!

I think it's a very budget friendly idea. We love going to pig roasts and SC loves BBQ...good luck on your decision Smiley smile

I’m on team “seeing a full animal roasting in a spit is repulsive” even though I’m not a vegetarian. So, definitely a matter of knowing your crowd. Logistically seems fine as long as you have pros on hand to tend to the roast and other food available for non-pork eaters. But just be mindful of the fact there could be people out there who wouldn’t want to ...greet their dinner that way 🤣
