Piercing A Baby/Toddler's Ears Vent

So SIL took my 1 year and 4 months old niece to Wal-mart today and got her ears pierced. MIL is furious at her, and I am a little too. I'm holding my tongue, because when it comes down to it she is her daughter but I am mad about it. IMO that's too young to be doing that. She can't even talk yet!...

I'm holding my tongue, because when it comes down to it she is her daughter but I am mad about it. IMO that's too young to be doing that. She can't even talk yet! I'm mostly worried because she likes to play with her brother sometimes in mud and I'm worried about infections or irritants, or that she will yank the studs out because this is a little girl who doesn't even like having a headband on for more than five minutes. Something in her ears irritating her might not work out good. Not to mention that IMHO something like that should be left up to her to decide for herself when she is older. At the very least until she can talk and understand you when you tell her not to mess with them. Am I just overreacting?

@Tina. I see! after I wrote that, I was like hmm maybe if I got them done younger I wouldn't have developed them..My dad took the longest time to let me get them..I think as I approached 18 years old he knew I'd be able to get them anyways. My sister had her ears pierced, the holes grew in since she didn't keep them in long enough, but she didn't really care..she didn't get the keloids though. Just glad mine isn't unsightly!

I'm sorry, but I have to laugh at people saying it doesn't hurt babies as much. Infants actually are more sensitive to pain than adults are. And would be more terrified because they have no idea what is happening to them and why they are being hurt. And just because they "won't remember" someone inflicting pain upon them at a young age doesn't make it right. Especially merely for cosmetic reasons. I will be waiting until I deem my child responsible enough if they should choose to do it and explain that it will hurt. If they are willing to accept that, then I could allow it.

If it came down to it I'd prefer to pierce my baby's ears over slicing off their genitals for no reason, but I honestly would prefer to keep my child's bodily integrity and leave any body modification to them when they are informed, consenting adults. Those of you saying it's a personal choice? You're right. It should be. The personal choice of the person whose body is being marked, pierced, scarred or cut.

I think it's too young, but my aunt did my cousins ears at like 6 weeks old. I would NEVER do this but maybe some parents get sick of no one knowing what sex their baby is.

I guess this goes along with the circumsizing a baby question. FH would want it done, I am not thrilled with this and will have a hard time watching someone hurt my baby. Yah I get it he has it done and bla bla he doesn't remember and yadda yadda. But still Smiley sad anyways I said I don't wanna be there when it happens.

If my sister took her kid to get her ears pierced to me it is the same as my bro taking his son to get circumsized. none-e-ya business. My ears probably would have been better off if my mom got them pierced when I was a year old instead she wouldn't let me do it so as a rebellious grade 7 I punched them through myself. ouch.

@ Alina H. Just to clarify maybe your ear piercings you have had awhile don't grow over mine have been done almost 20 yrs. If I take them out for more than a week I have to re-pierce. Also if you do the stretching you can shrink back down. All bodies are different. If you have the whole punched out to be like 10guage or something maybe it will never completely close but my body doesn't like piercings. Also a guy friend had his nipples done by a reputable place and his body rejected the piercings he now has two nipples split in half from the body pushing them out.

Honestly, I would never have a childs ears pierced until they can make that decision. My daughter had hers pierced at 12. I had mine pierced at 12, but, had problems with them from day one. I ended up having to have minor surgery, so, no earrings for me anymore.

IMHO, 1 year old, too young.

Had my daughter's ears done around at age 6months as well. She's 18. She's just fine, thank you. As for the whole 'pain' thing, don't forget that BIRTHING is about as painful as a baby will ever experience. They don't remember that (I dont, do you?) I seriously doubt they'll remember ear piercing at 6mos. We had my daughter's ears done in the doctors office with regular rechecks and cleaning. I can see everyone's point of view in this. There's not a medical need to do it..so I see Jesi's viewpoint. There may or may not be a medical need for circumcision either...but it's a well known procedure thats still prevalent. This is completely up to the parents and/or culture.
