Picnic wedding food

Future Mrs. Coombs, on October 1, 2013 at 4:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 26

So we want to do a picnic wedding, if weather allows. We are going to make a picnic basket for every family. What kind of food would you expect? What goodies would you include?

TIA!

Edit: It'll be in Georgia, so I was thinking Southern comfort food would be nice.

Is this for the main meal? Or, for like a welcome basket or favor?

Main meal. After our ceremony, we're going to lay out blankets and sheets in the field of the park we're getting married at. It's a very small destination wedding. There will be 15 guests at the most.

    How about fried chicken?

Hmm...for picnics I think of sandwiches or wraps, macaroni or potato salad, coleslaw, fresh fruit. If you want to fancy it up, maybe some wine & cheeses & grapes.

There's a southern restaurant that we go to every time we visit Atlanta. I was thinking of ordering to go plates for everyone and having my DOC finish up the picnic baskets right before the ceremony.

Personally, I think it's a cute idea. You may want to make sure your guests know that this is the intention (in case some would show up in skirts that might not be the best idea for sitting on the ground).

I'm not exactly an expert on Southern comfort food. The best I can offer is cornbread....

Having a DOC finish things up at the last minute is a good idea. That way you won't have to worry about the heat spoiling any of your food. Your restaurant may even have some type of a boxed lunch.

I did a beach wedding at a beachfront resort that provided box lunches for each guest. Blankets were spread on the sand. Everyone seemed to like the idea.

Chicken, biscuits, maybe corn on the cob though that can be really messy, wine, cheese and crackers. Pie and cake!

    eta: lemonade!

I love the idea fried chicken would be picnic but still nice, i don't think sandwiches would work.

I have no real suggestions on the food, everything here sounds great. I will suggest though, if you do finger food (like the fried chicken I see above) don't forget about the hand wipes! LOL

I know norm picnic food is sandwiches but I don't feel like that would fit southern food. I was thinking fried chicken, mac and cheese and other southern foods in little boxed lunches. OR I was also thinking of having a food truck cater. There's been sooo many ideas going through my head.

Caitlin- Definitely hand wipes will be included in the baskets! I was also thinking of lemonade in mason jars and water bottles too.

I just don't know where i can find picnic baskets

The picnic baskets are such a cute idea! I agree that it's difficult to find them, though. I rarely see any at stores. Williams Sonoma and Bed Bath & beyond usually have that kind of thing. Do some online searching to find baskets that suit your taste (and price range).

Yeah I'm googling it right now Smiley smile A lot of the ones I've found have plates and such already included. So I was thinking maybe just put the food in containers and have each family serve it family style?

Do you have any Christmas Tree Shops near you? They may have some baskets that are relatively inexpensive.

Lol it's an actual store called "Christmas Tree Shops" it took me a few years to go in but it's full of random junk. I got a picnic backpack from there for $8 and have seen some baskets in there.
