Picking a photographer

Cam, on April 26, 2020 at 9:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 14
We are starting to look for photographers. Ideally, we’d do a package with an engagement shoot included. Looking at a bunch of different options and feeling a little overwhelmed. What did you look for in a photographer? Did you look for anything specific, other than liking their photos?

The package had to cover enough hours for ceremony thru the first hour of dancing.
A second shooter was a must.
We didn’t want to pay a travel fee.It was important that we got along well, you do spend your entire wedding day with them after all.

Their typical wedding vibes/aesthetics. How they edit photos. I looked not only through Instagram and website, but asked for full galleries as well.

Also doing a phone call to get to know them was super important to see if you gel well together. Being comfortable and getting along with your photographer is super important! Would you want to get a drink with this person? It’s important to feel comfortable around your photographer since they’ll basically be with you all day.

As soon as my photographer told me she always has a backup shooter and backup equipment for everything in case anything goes wrong or she is sick, I was sold! She was so professional, clearly experienced, and we just clicked! We ended up spending a bit more than planned because she impressed us so much!

And I also second doing a long phone interview and make sure they go over everything their services include including if you'll get the USB of your prints (a MUST in case they ever shut down their site in the future), insurance, etc. And def make sure they include the ability to postpone and apply your deposit to a future date if needed if you are worried about coronavirus affecting your original plans.

First make sure you like their photography style and they're in your price range. Second, call them and talk to them and make sure your personalities mesh.

I had to like their photography style as well as click with them personally. I wanted a second shooter so that was a must, but most important for me (aside from price) was who I clicked with. The photographer I’m going with actually wasn’t even an option for me at first, but we met her when we met with our DJ because they’re a husband/wife team. She mentioned she did photography for weddings at the meeting. I honestly left the meeting feeling sad at the thought of her not being there with us because of how well we clicked. We met with 2 other photographers but it just didn’t click into place. So that is how we chose. Your photographer is going to be spending a lot of intimate moments with you (getting ready, right after you’re married, etc.) so for me it was very important to click personality wise. I had other factors of course, but that was top of the list.

We looked at the pictures of different photographers a lot but we did not decide until we had met them. The moment we met our photographer we knew she was going to be the one. Her personality is awesome, her pictures are exactly what we want. She asked us so many questions about what we wanted from her. Also the engagement shoot is included and so is a second shooter. Plus she will be with is all day (8-9 hrs.) She made us feel super comfortable and that was very important.

As far as looking for a photographer we went with one that was recommended by our venue so that they knew all of the best parts of the property. I also looked for someone who suited our wedding bf style and I feel like would tell our story best. I really liked how our photographer asked about how we met and what was really important to us! We also were on the same page as far as candidates went and the timeframe.
I think you really just have to go with your guy feeling and chose a photographer that feels right to you and your FH.

    Good luck!

You want to make sure their style is what you like but also to be certain your personalities mesh.
Ask questions about what type how much gear they use, how they back up your images (whether they shoot on one card or two cards simultaneously to back up as well during your wedding day), if they carry insurance, what exactly is included in their packages (digital high res images, prints, albums, etc.)

Thank you so much! Didn't even think to ask the venue if they have any prefered photographers.

You’re welcome! 😊 I’ve been on both sides as having worked as a photographer for many years and being a bride.

We picked 4 photographers we loved and interviewed them. We ultimately went with the photographer with the best personality and who was the most organized. You spend the most time with your photographer on your wedding day and they kind of dictate the day. You can always add on engagement photos and consider that in the price.

Oh and ask for full galleries but ask for specific things like a wedding during your month or at your venue. If you don't, they will send you pics of the best wedding they ever photographed where the lighting was perfect and the couple are models.
