Physician Name Change

Alexis, on October 30, 2017 at 2:53 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

Anybody currently in medical school or having gone through it & changing their name? Our wedding will be after I take my 1st set of boards, but we are considering getting married before so that the licensing isn't so complicated. I'd like to use my married name professionally as well. Any feedback? Thank you!!

I would check with your uni or whoever is administrating your qualification. They will be able to tell you when they need to know a name change by. I know it's different, but for my doctorate, whatever name I submitted under was the name on my PhD.

Not med school but I got married while in pharmacy school. I had my intern licenses in my maiden name but my PharmD is in my married name. I had to submit my wedding license to NABP to get my name updated with them before I could register for my boards. I don't know your exam schedule but it took a bit of time to get my legal name changed before I could test so I'd time it accordingly.

I'm in physical therapy school and am getting married before I'm finished. It will make things much less complicated with name changes!

I went to med school with several people who got married after Step 1 and most have changed their names. I'm not quite sure what was involved at that time but I'd talk to your school and I'm sure they'll have the name on your diploma reflect your married name.

I just finished residency and will not be changing my name for professional reasons- all the research before has been under my maiden name.

I have a colleague that just got married. We looked into the paperwork for changing our last names. It's super easy to do through the medical board website. The DEA was the biggest pain for her.
