Photos for January Wedding in Ohio

Amanda, on July 14, 2016 at 10:42 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

Hi, guys. We are planning a wedding for 1/14/17 and have found ourselves in a bit of a pickle. We want to have our Mass at 3pm. We are planning to do separate shots (girls and guys) pre-wedding and entire group shots and bride/groom shots after the wedding to conserve light. Even so, we are worried that the sun setting at 5:30, as predicted, is going to make for some pretty lackluster photographs.

How has anyone handled this, or do you have any suggestions for places in the northwest side of Columbus or downtown that are particularly well-lit or have twinkly lights? We'd rather not do all of our after photos indoors, if possible. Thanks!

As long as you have a great photographer who knows what they're doing, you should be fine. Good photographers have all kinds of tricks.

Bright sunlight isn't the best for photos anyway.

Our photographer has shot our venue a ton of times, and even did promotional work for them, so I'm confident he'll know all the best places for all of the best shots, before we signed the contract he warned us he'd be taking us outside no matter what the weather.

Sorry not much advice, but talk with your photographer, he/she will definitely be able to help!

Not sure how to help. Sounds like you're not doing a first look. That is what we are doing for our 4pm wedding. Just got the ok from our photographer the other day. He agreed that doing our first look and a few other bridal party shots will give him enough time after the ceremony to get a few more without losing the light. But then again, our ceremony will be no more than 20mins.

Depends on how long your ceremony is but if it's done in an hour or less you should be fine. 1-2 hours before sunset is actually the best timing for photos so you get that glowy gorgeous light fondly referred to as "golden hour" Smiley smile

Sorry I'm not helpful with locations! I'm not familiar with the Columbus area

Thanks for the feedback. We've discussed the whole "first look" idea but have decided we'd much rather avoid that. I'm pretty confident that our photographer will make it work, and if our pics are mostly a little darker, I've decided to accept that they are simply documenting the natural progression of the day. It's one more thing that makes a winter wedding special. It's the future Mr. Amanda Smiley winking who is skeptical. I'm hoping to come to him with some ideas in my pocket before we commit to 3 pm. 1 is just so early and the gap between ceremony and reception so vast. Will keep looking. Best of luck to you all!

Photographers love the "twilight hour." Right after the sun sets but before it gets dark is when most photographers get their best shots. Having a lot of light isn't always a good thing, so i think you should be fine.
