Photography timeline with first look...

Amy, on January 29, 2018 at 3:04 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

Hi all! So FH and I really want to do a first look and then the family/WP photos prior to the ceremony so that we can spend more time enjoying the party with our guests. We currently have access to the venue 2 hrs prior to the start of ceremony, does this sound like enough time? The coordinator at the venue told me it was, and my photographer came up with this sample timeline, but it still sounds to me like it could feel rushed. For those that have done first looks (& other photos) before ceremony - could you walk me through your timelines? Thanks!

Sample timeline:

1:30 pm – 1:45 pm Bridal Details

Tatyana shoots wedding details Steven documents girls getting ready

1:45 pm – 2 pm – Bride & Groom Prep

Tatyana shoots Bride Prep Steven shoots Groom Prep

2 pm – 2:15 pm – First Look

2:15 pm – 3 pm – Family + Bridal Party Portraits

3 pm – 3:30 pm – Ceremony Details

Bride and groom get tucked away as guests arrive

I find it a bit odd that you have timed out each section. I would suggest you have 1 hr 45 minutes - 2 hours for photos not counting your getting ready part.

Unless you really feel you have to stick to a strict timeline, which is stressful and not necessary I would just ensure you give yourself enough time to be finished in order to tuck away. Are you having a professional photographer? If so leave it up to them as to what they want to shoot when, they know best.

Only 15 minutes for a first look? I haven't worked with our photographer to create our timeline yet but, that seems way too short. We are planning closer to an hour for that but, I'll see what she recommends.

Yes we have a professional photographer and this is the sample timeline they sent us. We had let them know we wanted to do the first look & other photos before but was concerned with time, so they sent us this as an example of what the time breakdown could look like for the 2 hrs we were working with.

Also, I forgot to mention that we will have hair & makeup done at the salon prior to arriving at the venue, so that time will just be for getting dress on et cetera, not full blown getting ready.

Oh interesting, I wasn't really concerned with that portion of the timing, most other posts I've seen and what other photographers that we spoke with told us, is that the actual first-look is pretty short and usually takes 10-20 minutes, but I can see that being really nice to have that extra time (an hour like you mentioned) set aside to spend with FS before the craziness starts!

I guess I am just worried about all the other photos (family & WP) and having enough time after getting dressed and before needing to get tucked away again before guests arrive.

Our first look was probably only 15-20 minutes. There's only so long I can pretty cry before it becomes ugly cry. We didn't feel rushed at all, and then we had lots of time to take pics with our bridal party and relax before I had to go into hiding.

Professional photographers use this kind of format. they want it down to the minute especially so guests arriving early don't see the bride before the ceremony.

Thank you for sharing this! It makes me feel slightly more at ease haha Smiley smile The two of us are still going to be pulled away after dinner to do some of our B&G photos in the golden hour/ sunset lighting, so with that, and w/o a FOB first look, and with having the 2 photographers so that one can be capturing the details while the other is capturing the getting-dressed shots, the 2 hr time frame is sounding a little bit more reasonable than it did.

We did a first look and took the majority of the photos before the ceremony. We allowed 2.5 hours before the ceremony and about 45 minutes after the ceremony.

12:30-1: details and girls "getting ready"
    1-1:30: first look
    1:30-2:45: wedding party and family
2:45-3: drive to church, pics with vintage car
My photographer went ahead to the church to take detail shots.
    3:15-4: ceremony
4-4:15: group shot of all the guests,
4:15-4:45 more family and wedding party pics. (Guests begin cocktail hour)
4:45-5:45: join guests for cocktail hour
