Photography suggestions for interracial couple

Brittany, on December 15, 2016 at 8:24 AM Posted in Planning 0 16

This may sound silly to some people, but ... it is an issue I am having in our wedding planning.

I am a Caucasian woman marrying an African American man. We often times we have trouble getting a nice picture together because of the difference in skin tones and the lighting. We used an experienced photographer for our engagement pictures who works with interracial couples. Only problem- she's in Orlando and our wedding will be in Illinois. Does anyone know of any great photographers with this type of experience that are in Illinois? Does anyone have a suggestion of how to find one? Thank you in advance.

A skilled photographer should be able to take a great photo and have you BOTH look good. I would start by just searching photographers in the location you're looking (use the vendor tab here, Google, etc.) and taking a look at their work. If you're concerned about specifics, message them and talk about it in depth more.

I wouldn't worry about it too much though... As long as you pick a skilled and experienced photographer, have seen FULL galleries (not just portfolio highlights), read reviews, and make sure your personality and FH's personality mesh well with the photographer, you'll be all set Smiley smile

Ask her what she would charge if she flew to you?

I flew my photographer across the country- she lives in CA- and she came to my wedding in NJ.

    worth.every.penny.

I agree with @jo, reach out to the photographer you're eyeing and see how much it would be for her to come to you.

My photographer travels often and his fee for traveling is typically just the flight (on top of whatever package you chose, obviously). FH and I have an international trip planned and decided to have our engagement pictures done then and we are just paying for the photographer's flight, as the epics are already covered in our package.

I also think that it does come down to finding a good, skilled photographer. My parents are an interracial couple, and I am also in an interracial relationship, so I understand to a degree, but I don't think you have to go to super great lengths to find a super specific photographer, just one who knows what the heck they're doing Smiley smile

I definitely agree with PPs. I don't see why a skilled photographer couldn't do this. Just do your research

Baletica- it's actually a real issue- someone posted a hysterical line of photos of her and her fiance- they were interracial- and- she was SUPER pale- and he was fairly dark.

And it was really obvious it was a problem- she washed out in the sun and if there was a shadow in the sky and or the picture was saturated- you couldn't see his face.AT.ALL.

edit- hysterical because the issues with the pictures lined up side by side were comical because it was so all or nothing with the two of them picture wise- not b/c they were interracial- or having problems with finding a photographer- just to be clear.

In theory a skilled photographer can make it work- but only someone with skill whose had some practice.

If you like the original photographer- it's probably worth it to check- it was very affordable for me (granted I got a great deal) all in all considering what I go- but it was JUST as expensive to fly the person I wanted out as it was to hire someone locally.

I also agree with what Jo said and I was going to suggest it - if you love the photographer who took your engagement photos, it might be worth it to see how much it would cost to fly the photographer to your wedding and include a hotel if necessary. Of course check with her to see if she's available and would be interested in traveling. Knowing you love the photos she took of you already, getting her to do your wedding is probably your best bet.

@Baletica - uhhh as a dark-skinned AA woman with an equally dark-skinned AA man, it's an issue. I had to search high and low to find a photographer that knew how to photograph us very well. Most photographers who don't have a lot of AA clients do not capture our skin tone very well, and we appear too bright. I love my dark skin, and I don't want to be lightened in my photos. The photographer can have been in the business for decades, but if they don't have experience capturing dark skin clients, it's a problem for us.

@Brittany - honestly, I had to use Instagram to search for photographers. I looked at thousands of photos, then went to that photographers website and looked through their portfolio. For me, I would use #nycweddingphotographer or #nyphotographer. Do the same for your state.

Another great resource is Munaluchibride.com - it's a website dedicated to the AA community. Go to their vendors tab to find a photographer in your area.

And I agree with @JoRocka - check the cost of flying the photographer you used for your e-photos to come to you for your wedding. My photographer is based out of FL, I'm in NYC and he's not charging me a traveling fee at all!!!

I'm with @Jo...if your photographer did an amazing job with your engagement photos, see if they'd be available to fly out. The extra money you'd pay for travel and lodging would pale (no pun intended) in comparison to the comfort you'd feel in knowing that you have a good photographer that will capture both of you well.

A skilled photographer who knows how to work with flash / strobes and understands metering can get around this, it's all in a day's work. That said, many do not have that skill these days.

I get it; FH and I are interracial and we decided again some photographers (who had great pictures) because they didn't have any examples of multi-racial couples and honestly I'm not going to spend a large amount of money on something that is so important that I don't have reasonable assurance that it will look ok. The photographer that we ended going with had so many examples and I feel good about his ability to take photos of our many colored family.

Hello @Brittany - Yes a skilled professional photographer will be able to properly expose for skin tones. I am a Chicago based wedding photographer - if you need any more advice please feel free to message me.

OTF has done many interracial couples. The photographer must highlight both bride and groom with the proper exposure period. Ron and Joy

I know this thread is old, but just in case someone comes across it now. You definitely need a photography with experience and skills with mixed race couples. Anyone who has seen the fails would not recommend that any good photographer can do it. Don't risk it. It is worth the research.

Now, I'm looking for someone experienced with mixed race couples in North Jersey. And I know who NOT to use. Unfortunately for the other couples Smiley sad

I definitely feel your pain! Thankfully I haven't had any issues so far with me and FH both showing up well in pictures. Prom however was interesting. It was 2000 so no digital cameras quite yet so the photographer changed the lighting and settings 10 times to make sure at least 1 picture would turn out well since I'm super pale and my date was quite dark and the location was a darkish theater. Definitely look at their portfolios and look for mixed couples. It's much easier than it used to be thankfully to get the balancing right with digital cameras at least.
