Hey everyone!

I'm having a really hard time deciding what type of photography style I want. How did you guys decide what to go with?

I'm torn between dark and moody or bright and colorful.Photography Style 1

Each person has their own style. I personally like the brighter photos. Some are more muted or dark and for some that is what they like. I say go with what you and your fiancé like and don’t worry about anyone else.

We had 3 photographers to choose from with the all inclusive package that we opted for. We poured over their profiles & reviews. We chose our photographer because we liked his style & he took the time to explain how he would set everything up. He asked what we wanted & took the time to get to know us. It really depends on what you & your fiancé want & what your vision is on your day.

That's definitely a tough decision when you like two very different styles! I honestly had a pretty easy time with it. I think I leaned more toward the light and airy/ more soft and natural-colored photography and then just went with it rather than trying to research photographers with other styles. I loved the timeless romance of those pictures and how they emphasize gorgeous light! I also liked that (at least for the photographer I chose) the colors were closer to what they looked like on the day of the wedding rather than being overly stylized one way or the other.

It's completely up to your own personal taste! Maybe consider the season- I've noticed that dark and moody lends itself to fall weddings because that style tends to bring out an orange color. Since you're in October that could work! My only thing is this and please take it with a huuuuuge grain of salt: as beautiful as these dark and moody images are, I can't help but wonder if they might be a little trendy. There's absolutely nothing wrong with being trendy, but if that's a concern of yours this may be a con to consider.

Good luck!!!! I got so overwhelmed during the photography selection process. I had 8 in the running and it was so hard to narrow down- even though I had one style in mind. Definitely decide on a style first, then jump into inquiries!

My fiance and I didn't really have a specific style what we were looking for, until we saw our photographer's portfolio and realized that his style of photos was exactly what we wanted. You could like both styles - your photographer could do photos in both styles for you, depending on the scene.

Everyone has their own taste, so go with what feel and looks the best to you! It’s your wedding! For us though, our big thing on deciding on a photographer was someone whose color matched what the eye sees! All of the wedding styles are so pretty, but my fiancé and I wanted photos that were timeless; we worried that with really moody or really bright photos, we’d look back in 10+ years and be unhappy. We ultimately went with someone who does exactly what we were looking for style-wise. Her photos aren’t overly washed out and colors are really well represented!
My biggest advice when you do begin consulting with photographers is to ask for an entire gallery. See inside and outside photos, daytime and night, still shots and movement, to really get an idea on what you’re paying for. I had photographers that their instagrams were lovely, but seeing full galleries, you get such a better idea of their work, what they do/don’t do well, and how your photos will come out.
    Best of luck!!

I personally love bright and colorful photos. Have you asked your photographer if they can do a mixture?

I had the same problem! Dark and moody photos or the sepia-looking ones are absolutely gorgeous and definitely on-trend right now. But I also loved the light and airy look, and felt that they had a more timeless quality. Fortunately, my husband HATED the darker editing style, so our decision was pretty easy.

imo, there's more of an artsy seriousness to some of the darker photos, and that vibe doesn't really fit with us.

We just kept looking at portfolios and examples of wedding pictures and kept track of which ones we were drawn to. That really helped with nailing down the exact style and kind of photographer that we wanted.

For future photoshoots, like Christmas cards or family portraits, we might experiment with other styles, but we're really happy with the one we chose for engagement/wedding photos!

I’d look close at your photographers and see if they can offer both! Our photographer’s specialty is the dark and moody night photos, but she also takes beautiful light and airy photos so we will get both. Then you don’t have to choose!

Maybe it depends on the season? I would assume bright and colorful would be spring and summer.

I really like the bright and colorful because I think it's timeless and classic. Dark and moody is really popular right now and some photographers do a really good job with that style. I'm deciding on the bright and colorful because I want to be able to look back years from now and still know I will love the photos instead of choosing what is trendy right now.

I prefer the bright style because it's more true to life.
