Photography question:

Yas, on February 21, 2026 at 7:32 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5
Is it normal to be given a complimentary photoshoot with the expectation of money for any / all photos back? I expected prints would cost money but being invited over to a photographers studios I felt blind sided when told 10 digitals would cost around 500. Is this normal? This was a trusted vendor at a venue open house and I feel like it’s such a bait and switch move to not include a single digital picture in a complimentary shoot.

Finished product like photos are the property of the photographer. You pay for those rights. You can negotiate for fewer shots for less $ if you want, but you're not cheated here. The cost of business is rarely free.
I've known of starting photographers who offer engagement photos for free trying to build clientele. They put in time scouting locations and more beyond shoot time. But when the client pays nothing for everything, it's a loss and the dream of being a full-time paid artist doesn't materialize.

Ah, that does make sense. I just feel like it’s poor on the photographer to not fully disclose pricing until they have you in a room and then not offer at least 1 or 2 free pictures. I’ve dealt with photographers in a different type of community and transparency was key.

I'm curious. How were the results shown to you? Were they on a screen to let you preview the quality achieved? Probably one printed picture would be a decent offering, especially if a preview for wedding quality photography. But it would be nice if the photographer do a copyright and license agreement that, if they reserve the copyright, it is not for automatic sharing on their gallery sites

They invited us to their studio the next day and showed us about 100 different photos, that were already edited. They had it in the laptop and showed previews on a tv. I’ve worked with photographers for another type of genre and usually waited weeks, months with a discussed contract. It’s definitely made me really think twice with doing anything like this again.
