Hi FW’s!

I’m currently sourcing photographers and I was referred that is not on WW. She has two years of experience, one as a wedding photographer. She works with her husband whom she self taught. I checked out her Instagram and I really liked her photos but my sister says she too new for what she’s charging. She’s charging $3,500 for 8 hours and a wedding album. Her insta is @aliraehaney. What do you guys think? I have a call with another photographer just so I have options. Thanks!

Will you get both photographers for the whole 8 hours?

I think that is pretty reasonable for having 2 photographers. However, I definitely would ensure you love their photos before moving forward if she is new at this. I have seen two photographers below that price, I have Also seen two photographers above that price.

The rest didn’t post. Have you inquired exactly how many wedding she did in the year?

We live in a fairly high cost-of-living area. Daughter LOVED her photographer. He'd shot well-over 400 weddings when daughter first contracted with him almost two years ago. Her package included more than 11 hours of wedding coverage with her photographer, more than 8 hours for his second shooter, full rights to the 1100+ edited photos they took, a deluxe album, and a 4-6 hour engagement shoot in 3 locations with over 200 edited photos. She paid $2700, which included paid-in-full at time of booking and non-credit card discounts, off the full price of $4000. Since her wedding, he's probably shot at least 3 weddings of her friends. Good luck!

It can’t hurt to meet with her but I would also shop around. In my original response it said two. I’m not really sure why it said two lol. I meant to say many on both the cheaper and more expensive side. Definitely compare before booking though. It is very likely you could find someone cheaper that offers the same.

If you live in a high cost of living area that could be a good price for a newer photographer. I live in a high cost of living area and couldn’t find many under $5k. Also wedding albums are expensive so the fact that it includes that is a good deal.

Her photos look lovely! Is her fee comparable to other quotes your've received in the area? I'd ask to check out a full wedding album from a recent wedding if possible, sometimes photographers only post their best 1-2 shots from a wedding and the rest can be subpar.

Another thing I wish I'd considered at this stage is the turnaround time for photos. My photographer has a 10 week delivery time in the contract and no promise of a sneak peak. This is fine, but I wish I'd asked for 2-3 sneak peaks within a few weeks and paid extra if there was a fee! It's killing me not having any photos from our wedding yet.

Our venue recommended a photographer that was more expensive than another we looked at. We wanted a company that had multiple services (photo-video-DJ-photo booth) and had a solid backup plan - both of us have relatives with horror stories of vendors double booking or not showing up.
When preferred vendor (we agreed with venue) came in higher than other vendor, I told preferred vendor as much. They couldn’t lower the rate for what we originally asked for, but essentially offered to sweeten the pot with the photo booth (fiancé wanted, we didn’t think it was in the budget) and we made a deal that we are so happy about. We get our choice and we get more than we wanted for just a little over budget.
My advice is to negotiate. May or may not work, but even if you’re hesitant you can do this over email so it’s not as bad Smiley smile. If it doesn’t work, what’s the worst that will happen, you’ll pay what you would have anyway?
