Photographer - Typical policy?

Maggie, on September 11, 2019 at 10:59 AM Posted in Planning 0 6

One of the photographers we're considering will give us high resolution JPEG files, not RAW. Is this a typical policy?

Thanks!

Ours gave us 1,200 edited pictures, then uploaded all the raw pictures from the evening as well.

We are getting 100+ edited images and hour plus the raw photos and black and white of each.

Yes this is normal, the photographer is talking about the RAW file format which is only useful if you'll be the one editing the photos. Otherwise they're just huge files that are only supported by design software. You can still ask for ALL the photos depending on your contract, but they will most likely process them into JPG for easier access. (I'm a graphic designer and even I was happy with high-res JPGs)

It makes sense because RAW files are HUGE and would take a bajillion memory sticks and slow down most computers. The only problem with a jpeg is that they get corrupted over time. So every time you open it the quality lessens a bit. It's really not noticeable to the naked eye, but see if he can save them in a .tiff or .png format. Also, ask him if you can get the raw file if there are any pictures you see that you want to blow up really big. That's the only case where I could see you even wanting the raw file. Maybe he'll do it for you.

    Hope this helps!

I agree with this, it’s typical policy but if you’re not happy with it you can try to negotiate for the RAW file format if you haven’t already signed.

RAW’s are really only necessary if you plan on editing the photos. But I’m sure the photographer wouldn’t like other people editing their work which is why they typically don’t give RAW. But id say it’s pretty typical. Our contract states that under no circumstances will the photographer release RAW images.
