Photographer tip.

Kellie, on February 27, 2020 at 1:35 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 20
As a photographer, I’ve only ever been tipped one time.

My photographer for my wedding will be with me five hours. (12-5) I have her a place at a table to sit and eat, and am paying for her to do my pictures and for her dinner.
What is an appropriate tip for me to give her?

Do you do wedding photography? I've never heard of not tipping a wedding photographer $50-$200.

I will be tipping, just wasn’t sure what the standard tipping percentage was. Thank you.

We have our photographer for 5 hours. We're tipping $50--she owns her business.

Daughter's photography package was $2700, and he and his second shooter were with us for about 11 hours. Their meals were included, but we never considered that part of their compensation or a benefit.... We tipped $200 in cash and left it up to the photographer how he shared that with his assistant; knowing him, he probably gave it all to her.

I was always told and have read tons of places online, if the photographer or dj owns their own business youre not expected to tip them, but if they have a helper you tip them.

Tips seem like they can pay for another wedding entirely. LMAO. I would do what you can.

I can't believe you've only ever been tipped once as a photographer! That is nuts!

I think we gave ours a couple hundred bucks. We also fed her dinner.

Oy. Considering how much I'm already paying my photogs (almost 3K total - biggest expense after the venue/food), I wasn't planning to tip them. We are already planning to provide them food (along with the DJ & DOC as well). I will probably tip the DOC and DJ, just TBD how much.

I would not think to tip them lol not until I saw it here. As another pp stated that if they own their own business then you do not have to but now I plan to 20% if they are amazing of course I see that photographers charge thousands so I would not think to pay more. Also, I did not know it was expected to feed them until you I saw that lol. There are so many wedding etiquette rules that if people do not look it up they would not know. I think that I work for hours teaching students and no one brings me food so I would never think to pay someone for working but now having done the research I can see why and would accommodate. I think 15% is good.

I always think someone providing you a service deserves a tip (server, hair dresser, hired driver). I see a wedding photographer as someone providing me a service. So it’s just something I never questioned. I do, however, see your point regarding the teacher reference. I worked in restaurants and bars all through college, so I’m just really big on gratuities/tips lol.

Do you tip day of, or after you get your photos back?

I’ve heard so many horror stories about not getting photos back or they were done really poorly, so personally I wouldn’t feel comfortable tipping until I’ve received final photos

And see I never did lol. I always tipped waiters because that is how I was raised and I know in the US that they are under paid because in some countries you do not need to tip. I realize photography like any job is hard work but I feel like photographers, hair dressers, etc...charge what they feel they are worth and that might be thousands whereas a waiter is underpaid. I guess I always assumed only tip for those under paid but now have researched and been made aware of etiquette I did plan to tip unless they horribly suck ha ha.

Thank you all for your feed back. I am sorry (mom of 5) I can’t respond to each one individually but I’ll try, lol. Me feeding the photographer isn’t part of her compensation at all, nor do I know if it’s required. However my husband and I were raised in the south, we feed everyone lol. I tip everyone, waiters, baggers at the grocery store, Hair dresser, ect. I’ve just never been photographed by a pro (YEARS ago a friend gave me a free shoot to build her portfolio) and like I said, as a photographer of 4 years now I’ve been tipped once. I even shot a very low key wedding and wasn’t tipped, lol. So I wasn’t sure how much. Thanks!

Mom of 5 you are a busy woman lol. It is all good. Smiley smile I am from Florida (not really the south lol) but I was taught tip waiters, hair dressers and nail techs and of course services where they depend on tipping. I used to be a bagger as a teen and I remembered we were not allowed to receive tips which is why I never tip baggers not maybe unless they help me to my car ha ha. Truthfully there is a lot of wedding etiquette I would not think of like tipping for use of a venue, a cake decorator because for some I feel the prices are so much that I am almost paying a lot and in some cases more than it is really worth. However, for the wedding I am thinking tipping photographers, officiants, and maybe the owner of the venue.
