Photographer suggests make up without minerals ?? what do you think?

Bee, on April 30, 2013 at 2:18 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 23

I am sorry for blowing the posts up with questions ladies, but I am three weeks from the big day so I am full of last minute questions. My photographer says to avoid mineral makeup because it reflects light (or something of that nature) and does not look good in photographs. I left my MUA a message to make sure she has a foundation that wont do this, but I need a translucent powder for touch ups during the day. I was originally going to buy MUFE HD powder but I saw these celeb pictures and heard it was MUFE so I am a little hesitant. What should I use for touch ups?

Also- planning on using the HourGlass veil mineral primer to help waterproof my skin a little, is this a bad idea? I want to look good in photos but my skin gets shiny really quick without a matte finish.

Here is the powder-http://www.sephora.com/hd-microfinish-powder-P210400?skuId=1510247

And the scary picture! Ahhh!!! Scary ghost!

I've heard this from not only my photographer but from a MUA at Sephora. I think she said it was the talc in mineral finishing powder that will show up poorly. She suggested not using any mineral finishing powder.

I do use Hourglass as my primer and love it.

Also if you get shiny, keep those blotting papers around. Use that in between pictures and ceremony/reception to freshen up.

Good idea I will pick those up. Would you wear the HourGlass for a primer on your wedding day? It is better than no primer at all, right?

Marlina- I love the mineral stuff too, (and even when I dont it is hard to escape since it is everywhere)

The thing I am wondering is- isn't there minerals in everything? So how do we know which minerals to choose? Like Katie said, I am thinking it is maybe the Talc or something specific. MIca? Silicone is a mineral....... :-/

I think MAC makes a good transcluscent powder that a few photographers have recommended. I'm going to have to look for the name though

I have to due to large pores and oily skin. I've been testing makeup for months and I'm down to two foundations I love and work well throughout the day: Tarte Amazonian Clay Long Wear foundation and Urban Decay Naked using Hourglass as a primer and a little bit of Buxom Luminizer to give a bit of glow. I use the green tea blotting papers to remove any shine but no matter how good the makeup, I still get some oiliness after some time.

Any make-up with SPF will also "flash back" at the camera.

Your best bet is professional quality makeup designed for photography and film. If you have hired a MUA, she/he will have the proper products.

Consumer makeup not designed for photography may present a problem with artificial flash of the camera washing out your skin tone on pictures. Most "over-the-counter" cosmetics lack beneficial pigments and will fade away long before the night is over. Just like quality cosmetics, a good set of brushes can make your application so much easier. Expect to pay a decent amount for quality products and tools. One professional brush can set you back between $35 and $75.

Be sure to practice with a full blown makeup application and take as many pictures in different lighting and locations as you possibly can. Apply your makeup early in the morning and note how well it lasts throughout the day. Do this for several days; wearing your makeup while you workout, clean the house, go shopping, etc. You want to see how well it holds up under the worst conditions. This way, you can rest assured knowing your makeup will still look fabulous from the moment you walk down the aisle until you make your final get away at the end of the night.

Many area makeup artists will offer tips and technique training classes with either individual or group lessons. I highly recommend attending a class or private session to tweak your wedding day bridal look. It may be difficult to learn how to master the art of creating flawless skin but with practice, you should be able to create a picture perfect look.

Completely agree with your photographer, and I wouldn't wear the Hourglass Mineral Primer for that reason. Let your MUA choose the products. Buy blotting papers and ask her to suggest a setting powder if you still need one.

I wore mineral makeup for our engagement photos and IMO I don't look ghostly or washed out or shiny. It gave me a nice glow. I'm not white though (no one take that the wrong way) so maybe it only does that for the paler shades. The celeb photos you posted it's not the makeup doing that. There's a makeup trick where you put powder under your eyes before you put on eye shadow so if any falls it'll land on the powder and it'll all just brush off without leaving any dark smudges or streaks. That looks like their MUAs forgot to dust the powder off.

I wore Sonia Kashuk mineral makeup. Pic attached.

Stephanie, I appreciate your input greatly! Thanks! I have a professional MUA who will do my wedding for the day of, but I am not having a trial (she is VERY expensive) which is unfortunate, but we did have a consultation- but I never considered asking her about the products. I saw they were in packaging I did not recognize and I was surprised the selection of eye shadows was a lot less than I expected. (20 colors maybe)

I was looking for a powder I could purchase for touch ups during the day because my face gets shiny during hot weather. Any suggestions ?

Pan, the instances with Nicole Kidman and other celebs actually is their makeup. They used HD makeup which was made for film. It was NOT made for photography though, and that happens when the flash is used. There are plenty of youtube videos of people trying it out themselves. Every day mineral makeup isn't as bad as the HD stuff, and it's SPECIFICALLY if the photographer needs to use the flash.
