Photographer red flag?

Sphinx1108, on September 22, 2020 at 8:03 PM Posted in Planning 0 10
How long after you’ve decided to book a photographer should it take for them to provide you a contract to sign? It took two weeks after I messaged this photographer on their website to respond back to me and then over a few days we discussed things back-and-forth via email. The photographer indicated he would send a contract by the end of the week and that was three weeks ago. So I sent an email, waited another week, never heard back and decided to text him. It took another day for him to reply and he said he would send the contract over that day and I still haven’t seen anything. Am I being too anxious? Or is this a red flag and I should drop him and get a different photographer? I want to fall engagement photos and I’m afraid if I wait too long for this photographer fall will be over before I know it! But I also realize this is probably a busy season for fall wedding photographers so I don’t know if I’m just being impatient or if he’s being unprofessional? Help! I’m worried.

During COVID, I try to give vendors more time to reply, since everything is crazy for everyone. However, in your case, that seems a little long to wait, especially after multiple promises of a contract with no follow through and also the difficulty you've had just getting a reply from him. I personally prefer vendors who I can communicate with easily, so to me, this would be a deal breaker. If you really like his work and want to give him one more chance, you could email or call him and say if you don't receive a contract by [date], you'll need to move on and find a different photographer. Otherwise, I would start looking for someone else. Good thing that you find out about the lack of communication now instead of after you paid the deposit.

    Hi sphinx1108.
I highly recommend moving on with another professional wedding photographer. This behavior is unprofessional and concerning. 2 - 3 days at the latest for a reply is acceptable. A week? Weeks? No way.
    Best wishes.

Look for a new photographer communication skills are key. I had a similar issue with my floral after paying her in full she practically ghosted me. She is a little better now. We will see if she shows up lol. If I could afford to hire another florist I would have fired her.

Totally agree- move on & find another photographer. If his lack of response is any sign as to how he is on the day of, I’d be very afraid!

I would definitely find a new photographer. COVID is no excuse to be 3 weeks late with a contract. That is ridiculous and so unprofessional.

Def find someone else. A couple of days is reasonable, but weeks??? No. If they can’t communicate with you now when you’re essentially offering them money, I doubt it will get better. That is so unprofessional. Trust your gut, move on, and find another photographer. IF by chance they actually send you a contract, just respond that you decided to hire someone else and leave it at that. You don’t owe them anything.
