Photographer moved 4 states away

Katie, on January 25, 2021 at 12:07 AM Posted in Planning 0 12
So I took a chance on a new photographer whom I know their significant other. The photographer told us they had never taken wedding pictures before but would be glad to do it. I figured it would work out for both parties because we didn't have a lot of money to work with and the photographer is just starting out. But I found out today through Facebook that my friend and their significant other whom was supposed to take the pictures moved 4 states away. So now I'm freaking out a bit like did I just lose my photographer? Are they still going to come and the photographer still going to do the pictures? I don't see the photographer coming 4 states away to take pictures but then again maybe they still plan on coming or maybe they forgot. And then I'm like if the photographer doesn't plan on doing the wedding anymore because of the move that's messed up because they could have given me a heads up way sooner. I only have 200 days. They probably forgot to be honest. But I'll know tomorrow after I talk to them. Wish me luck.

Call first thing Monday and find out. If not, then search Instagram for a new one in your area

Yea I'm definitely going to call tomorrow. And then if they aren't doing it, I guess either be on the search for someone in our price range or just talk to my one bridesmaid who is also a photographer on possibly taking the wedding pictures.

Avoid asking your bridesmaid if possible. You want her in photos with you and you can't do that if she's working

I asked her in August if she could be a backup plan and she was fine with it. Her boyfriend who is coming to the wedding also does photography. So during the ceremony and times she would be photographed he will be the one taking the picture, for pictures without the bridesmaids she will be taking the picture.

Definitely message them. Did you already sign a contract and put a deposit down? If so I would think they would either do the photos or return your money.

Did you sign a contract? Also if they do come 5 states away, look to see if there’s a charge mentioned in contract. If they plan on still taking pics, I’d ask what their backup plan is in case theyre unable to make it for whatever reason. Best of luck on the call!

So I take it that you didn't sign a contract with this person?

We have a contract, but the photographer didn't take a deposit, they were going to collect their money the month of the wedding.

Update: I just got off the phone with the photographer and she reinsured me that she didn't forget and she is still planning on coming up for the wedding. She was going to contact me about not worrying after getting settled in.

Did you sign a contract with them? If so, they are legally bound to travel and photograph your wedding. However, based on what you described, I would look for a new photographer. I would never trust someone who has never photographed a wedding to take your wedding photos. That will be one of the most important things you take away from you wedding day.

I'm going to take a chance on the photographer, she has done very beautiful photos so far in all sorts of lighting. And she's my very good friends fiancé so I don't mind helping a friends business out. When I called her today she said she is absolutely going to be taking the photos of the wedding even though they moved 4 states away. We do have a contract with her.
