Photographer editing

Neena, on September 19, 2019 at 12:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 5
I don’t want to embarrass myself in front of my photographer during our upcoming engagement session but is it normal to ask the photographer to photoshop the pictures to remove imperfections or alter pics? For example, I wanted to ask him to brighten my smile and remove scratches I have on my arms and hands from my animals clawing me. Is this reasonable? Should I ask? Or would he already know to do this? I don’t want to appear shallow or something

I would ask since those kinds of edits could be an extra charge.

Definitely ask your photographer about what they typically edit for. Daughter's photographer said he doesn't generally edit to "enhance/change natural appearance" (so, no super model type editing for thinner arms or straighter/whiter teeth, etc.), but would edit something like a noticeable pimple, etc. I'm only the MOB. I have a very noticeable scar on my back. About 8" of the scar showed above the back of my MOB dress. We never asked him to, but in a couple of pictures where it was very obvious (like, when my back is in the foreground of the shot of daughter and FOB walking down the aisle), he edited my scar out. However, in other pictures, like group dancing shots at the reception, he didn't edit my scar. (Honestly, I was glad he didn't edit it every time, I own my battle scar!) Regardless of your photographer's policy, realize that because editing is very time consuming, extensive editing will drive up your costs. So think about what is really important to you and how that can best be accomplished. (For example, it might be worth talking with your dentist about teeth whitening options rather than paying your photographer to edit them in every photo or asking your HMUA about covering scratches/scars, if those are concerns.)

Definitely tell him. I think they must hear that a lot. I have a horrible scar on my ankle from my 90 lb dog running by me and wrapping her lead around my ankle. I love her and wish she was with us on the day of, but not in that way lol. I will be asking my photographer to either edit it to be less noticeable or only photograph from the other side for the photos putting on my shoes or garter toss.
