Photographer Communication

This is my first post on here but I don’t know what else to do so I’m putting this here for advice. I found a photographer; paid the deposit and everything. January 19th I paid the deposit and she said she’d give me the contract tomorrow.. January 20th, she ended up not messaging me so I messaged her on January 24th and she said I would have it by Sunday; February 2nd but it arrived the next day.

She didn’t message me back on February 2nd when she said she would mail the contract to my house (never did) and I had to start another round of conversation on February 22nd. 20 days after the initial contact. Once again she didn’t message me on February 24th saying she’d get back to me on dates until I messaged her today.

Each time she says great to hear from you when she never gets back to me. I hired her in January and didn’t get the contract until February. That’s when I asked about engagement dates for April and she said she would get back to me. Today she said that “ I offer free engagement sessions if we can make the dates work. I’m sure we won’t have a problem but I do have events booked pretty much through April . I also start my other weddings etc . I normally have people book out a few months.” She’s acting as if I didn’t give her plenty of notice when we said April in February.

It’s understandable that she’ll be busy, I know how wedding season is. I say a date works for us and her and it’s booked.

But to top it all off.. My fiancé and I want to take our engagement pictures in Springfield, Missouri because we met there and fell in love. I told her this and she said of course and that it would work; I mentioned the city/ state three times and even locations that would work. But she gets back to me and says she thought I meant Springfield, Illinois and that she won’t go there for an engagement session. Which normally I would be fine with but she said it was fine three times. It just seems as if she’ll say one thing and then do another. What do I do?

This is one of the times I mentioned Springfield, Missouri. Photographer Communication 1

She sounds flighty. I would look for another photographer.

You clearly said Missouri. I’d try to get your money back if I were you.

Something is definitely off. Have you ever talked to each other over the phone? And I’m confused as to why pay a deposit before receiving the contract? Or maybe I’m misunderstanding

Do you live in Illinois? They are quite a bit of distance between the 2 places. I would think a photographer would travel long distances without an extra as in more than the wedding fee.? I would check my contract and see what sort of out you have.

Agreed with this. She doesn’t sound like someone who you can trust for your wedding photos let alone engagement photos

100% find someone else, I wouldn’t even trust her to be there the day of the wedding! She sounds awful, there’s nothing worse than not being able to get ahold of someone. She’s running a business, there is no excuse. “Busy” is nonsense, she’s telling you you’re not a priority and that’s a solid pass for me. Find someone else

Hi! No we have not talked over the phone but she does have a website, an instagram, and a Facebook. She said in order to save the date I needed to make a deposit the same day she said a couple was looking at the same date. So I paid it and then she said the contract would come afterwards.

I live in Illinois right now but our wedding is in Hermann, Missouri and we wanted our engagement pictures in Springfield, Missouri. So I don’t really see how she got illinois.

You clearly said Missouri but that does seem like quite a drive for engagement pics...

It seems fishy to me. When I began emailing my photographer, the first thing he requested was an in-person meeting to talk about what we wanted and so we could meet each other. Many photographers I talked to requested the same.

I'd definitely get your deposit back, and look for another photographer. I don't like her vibes at ALL.

I wouldn't have paid a deposit without signing a contract - those two should be done together. At this point it sounds like she isn't working out well for you and I'd look for another photographer.

This is not how a professional acts, starting with the fact that a contract was not presented before taking your money. I would cancel ASAP. You likely won't get back your retainer, but you should still ask for it. Regardless, I would still take the loss of that retainer over having an unprofessional, untrustworthy person taking my wedding photos.

P.S. I'm a photographer and that's not how a customer service-focused, communication-oriented, professional photographer behaves or treats clients.
