Photographer clash with a Videographer?

Valerie, on February 22, 2019 at 1:16 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 11
Hello all! I would love some opinions from you.

Heres the deal. I hired our photographer a few months ago. They do offer a videography package, but we decided not to add that.

A friend who will be attending our wedding called us yesterday. He is starting a business which includes videography and he wants to shoot our wedding (for free). He isn’t coming to our wedding specifically to do this, but to be a guest.

I am concerned that my photographer will not be pleased if I allow my friend to do this.

What would you do? Call the photographer and ask if they would be offended? Tell the friend no?

I dont think I would be having such a hard time with this if my friend came to us before I booked the photographer.

Well the photographer can't force you to use their videography services. You are allowed to look elsewhere for that. So they shouldn't be offended really (not saying they won't be).

If it was me, I would simply let the photographer know that your friend will be doing this. I wouldn't ask permission, it is your choice to make. But let them know, so it doesn't come as a huge surprise the day of.

I'm not having a videographer but I don't think it will be a problem. My photographer doesn't offer vidiography so we would have to hire one if we wanted one or we would have someone we know do it. Just because they offer something to you doesn't mean you have to take it. Our caterer offers a wedding cake option for additional costs, were not taking it and having someone else make it.

Valerie, I don't think you need to tell your photographer anything. If you do, eventually, tell your photographer that a friend is doing your video as a wedding gift. Its true. You do not owe your photographer explanations! This should not cause you an issue. I would hope the person would be happy and gracious. Best wishes!!

A good photographer will tell your friend where to be so he isn’t in the way of photos. It might not be super smooth if your wedding is his first job but you have to start somewhere.

We booked a photographer and a separate videographer later luckily they know each other and have worked together in the past so I’m not worried about them clashing and getting in the way of each other. Has your friend done a wedding before? I would suggest having a conversation with everyone together so they are all on the same page. And give them each other’s contact so they they can figure things out together.

It’s easy to feel like you need to befriend the people you booked but just remember you are paying them to do a job so you shouldn’t have to feel bad about not booking their videographer.

I think it’s great you will have a free videographer I had to pay thousands of dollars for mine so you definitely take advantage of the sistuation.

Another thing to keep in mind is it’s really hard to be a guest and work during your wedding. 3 of my guests are photographers but we wanted them to enjoy the wedding and not work so we booked our own photographer.

Plenty of people hire separate videographers. I don’t see why your photographer would have an issue, but if they do it’s just that, their own issue. I wouldn’t worry about it.

Plenty of people hire a different photographer & videographer not from the same company, it's completely normal!

My photographer and videographer were not from the same company and they had no issues on the wedding day. It's actually fairly common to hire two different companies. Professionals should know how to work and dance around each other. Hopefully your friend who is new to the business will keep it professional and not get in the way of photos, but I wouldn't tell the photographer anything.

You deff have the right to have your friend do videography services without asking permission to the photographer however like PPs have mentioned you should deff tell your photographer for the mere fact that the videographer and photographer should work together as a team so that they don't get in each other's way etc.

Ours were not from the same company and did fine together. The videographer knew how to stay out of the way of the photographer.
