Photobooth Backdrop Color - photographers advice appreciated!

Alina, on May 9, 2012 at 8:45 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 12

So I'm DIYing a photobooth and am wondering if it matters what color my backdrop is. Matching my wedding colors isn't important to me.

Is there a certain color that's better for photographing? Any that tend to wash people out?

My reception - and the photobooth - are outdoors, open to natural light.

Am I overthinking this? haha

Black or white is likely best. It honestly depends on their clothing as well. I usually suggest to clients that their outfits blend with the background as much as possible so the focus is on their faces and not their clothing. Hard to do with a photobooth though, of course. I would suggest a plain black one because most people won't be wearing white (besides you, I assume) so it's a safe neutral color to go with.

Thanks Jesi - If going with black, what about chocolate brown instead? Because that is one of my colors. Would probably be the same, yeah?

Kali - I love the one with the frames in the back! I'm basically stringing up a simple backdrop...whichever color I decide to go with and providing them with fun props. I made mustaches and big lips on sticks, big glasses, feather boas, old hats, etc. Oh I have a couple picture frames they can hold up too and I think I'm going to make a couple chalkboards so that they can write messages.

If you google DIY photobooth, you should be able to find templates for mustaches and stuff. I jsut used craft foam and dowels.

Oh yeah, brown would be good too Smiley smile The darker color is just nice because it won't wash out like white would. I do love the frame ideas though, super cute!

Definitely not white or something that is to light, I would also stay away from black because the camera may try and white meter for the black, making it lighter, but washing out the people. Generally stick to neutrals (think like school picture backgrounds)

The only possible problem with a dark brown is if you have friends or family with dark skin they may blend in. If no one you know is that dark you should be fine- but i would still recommend a grey instead.

Hmm ok maybe a light brown or a grey would be better than.

Kali - my brother and sister both have professional cameras, so I'll be setting up one on a tripod. I have a friend who said she would man the camera and take pictures during our "cocktail hour". After that, I'm not totally sure, but I think I'll have the remote available for people to take their own pictures. It won't print them out for them to take automatically, but I'm either going to set up a photosharing site later or print some out and send them to people. Maybe both Smiley smile

We're not exactly sure how we're executing it but we're are gonna have a basket of disposable cameras and some props with a backdrop, as well as the standard cameras on tables idea

I'm having a DIY photobooth using the computer, printer, webcam and Sparkbooth program.

I'm thinking of going with a white background just cause i heard its easier on the printer and if you watch the lighting it wont wash them out too badly. I'm going to set up a test booth but not for a while yet.

A black and white texture would look best in the photos. Everybody looks good in front of black and white, plus it's a fun and bold background. There are lots of black and white patterns to choose from!
