Phones & Photos during Ceremony

Courtney, on March 16, 2024 at 6:14 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 3

So some background: I'm planning on hiring a photography student/friend as my photographer for my budget wedding. So this got me thinking, just in case she needs a little extra support - I'm debating the fact if I want to allow phones or have an "unplugged ceremony". I created signage to be posted while guests arrive:

Should I do it? Is it too risky because there might be phones ending up in the pics? Or is this a good idea in case she misses something?

These types of signs can be controversial. Some people like them, and others really really don't. My thought is that I don't really need to be told how to behave in a group event like a wedding, and it could come across as condescending. Remember the sign will likely be the first thing people see at your venue, is that the first impression that you want to give?

I feel like it could be risky. Our ceremony will be unplugged, but guests will be able to take videos and pictures during the reception. With the amount that I’m paying for my photographer, I’m making sure that rules are put into place so she can do her job properly.

I think this is the right approach! I'd say photos and videos shouldn't be entirely forbidden and guests have no right to take a photo wouldn't make sense to me (in fact, we welcomed people taking pictures and even asked them to send them in later if they wanted to as we were making a Smartshow 3d video for our guests with the photos they took so that they'd be included as well!). Still, people shouldn't interfere with the photographer doing their job, so it needs to be regulated just a bit.
