Petticoat or Hoop Skirt for my Ball Gown?

Rebecca, on August 24, 2021 at 7:52 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

Hi brides! I need help deciding between adding nothing, a petticoat, or a hoop skirt to my ball gown. I would like to add a bit of extra fullness to the dress. I will be sitting during part of my ceremony so I would like it to look full but I am concerned I won't be able to do that sitting with a hoop skirt. I am also concerned if I go with a regular petticoat it won't add much volume because my dress already has 9 layers of tool and it would just weight it down. So part of me feels like the hoops are necessary to keep it up. Thoughts??? I have absolutely no experience with this stuff! Thank you brides!!!!

If you want full volume, the hoop skirt is the way to go. The thing about hoop skirts is that the hoops themselves generally don't start until a bit below the bum, so you should be able to sit ok in it. But you could always try one on in a bridal store and practise in it and see if you'd be comfortable with it!

Your dress is absolutely stunning on you! Personally, I think it’s perfection exactly the way it is. I wouldn’t add anything.

I have a similar style skirt on my dress (probably more A-line than yours though) and I bought one of these cheap trumpet petticoats on Amazon to wear for the ceremony! It gave my dress the perfect about of fullness and isn’t too heavy, and I can take it off after the ceremony for the reception.

I wore a hoop skirt. It was really comfortable. It just had one hoop at the bottom. It gave my dress volume and kept the fabric away from my legs. My dress was a fit and flare so it would probably work different with your silhouette. It would probably have at least one more hoop.

I caution against taking it off at the reception. I accidentally pulled mine down when using the restroom and couldn’t get it back up. (I was a little tipsy and hot and sweaty from dancing). It definitely affected my dress length and the fabric kept getting between my legs making dancing a little less fun. It wasn’t horrible, but something to think about.

I actually have troubleshot that with my tailor/seamstress. We split the difference in length caused by adding the petticoat, so it’ll be just a bit long at the reception yes, but honestly I’m sure my shoes will come off at some point during all the dancing and fun and it will end up be long regardless. Not worried about it Smiley smile

Hoop skirts are amazing. With one caution - make sure your aisle is wide enough for you and anyone walking with you. That said you can get any number of hoops in a hoop skirt. And if they go high up then you lift one of the hoops so you sit on the fabric between them. Some hoops begin at the knee. Some at the hip. Some have just one at the floor. Amazon is great for trying various combinations - you can also return what didn't work for you. Practice with the skirt so you can easily sit. It's a great idea!!

Thanks Cassidy! Good to know it was comfortable. I might try a hoop and petticoat and see which, if any, I like.
