Personal vows

Mackenzie, on January 4, 2020 at 12:39 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 9
All my ladies out there writing personal vows! Needing some love and support!

How did you write them? Did you give your fiancé a word count? Or any prep?
We are doing “first look” with personal vows. Just him and I and our photographer and then doing a ceremony later that day. We wanted to elope but this is best of both worlds.

We plan to write our own vows for our elopement. I have written some ideas but haven’t gotten too far just yet. And he’s a procrastinator so I know he hasn’t started either.

    We wrote our own vows.

DH is a writer by trade, and I swore up and down I wouldn't have *any* issues writing it.

DH had to go to a groomsman's house the day before the wedding for help, and I must have had more than 4 started drafts... and had a writer friend proof read multiple times.

There are lots of blogs and advice articles out there, with a quick google - I found a few of them helped, at least to give me an outline. DH and I ended up having very different approaches to the vows, but they were both really heartfelt and I'm glad we did them.

We wrote our own vows. I looked up samples online. I also watched videos on YouTube of couples wrote their own vows. After they were done, I practiced saying them to make sure they weren't too long.

I really wanted to elope. We’ve been put through the ringer with our families so I wanted something special for him and I. It’s so important to have special little moments on your big day just the two of you. I used to be traditional bride. And then I heard of this and I was like umm this is me.

Love that you guys get to have the best of both worlds! I was in the same boat but then I remembered all I'm doing is letting the person I love know how awesome they are, what they mean to me and my promise to them. I started a google document and everytime something that I love about my fiance stands out, I write it down. I've written things about our journey together, how he makes me feel and things of that nature. I'm keeping a running log of things that pop out and then I'll make it all make sense as we get closer. Trust me, somethings will just flow!

My best advice is to start working on it early so you don't feel rushed and to speak from your heart. They don't have to be perfect and they don't have to follow a certain format. Everyones vows are different and there are a million and 1 ways to do them. Find what fits the two of you...do y'all joke a lot (might add some jokes in), are you spiritual people (might add a nice prayer for your union or for your future spouse) or do you want to just wing it and speak to the moment...so many options! I don't think you should worry about a word count either. Well we aren't, hopefully they match on timing lol!
