Permission to cry please

Sara, on June 21, 2021 at 6:08 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

So, long story short I postponed my wedding, lost a lot of weight and had to buy a new dress. It was last minute so I had a rush order, it was supposed to be here the 14th, my wedding is end of August. No worries it will get here just in time to schedule alterations. Well... a week later still haven't heard from them.

So I called today to figure out what is happening. Turns out my dress DID come in last week. BUT there were some beads missing so they SENT IT BACK. They never even called to ask. Now my dress will not be here until August 16th......13 DAYS BEFORE WEDDING DAY. Alterations will not be possible at that point without costing a fortune because most places have a 4 week turnaround. I wish they had called me to tell me about the beads because I would have not cared, or I would have taken them somewhere to be fixed.

They are not compensating me in any way, because it was just standard procedure what they did. But I am sitting here in my room bawling my eyes out asking myself why this is happening to me. I don't need pity but maybe advice on what to do because I am lost.

I’m so sorry to hear this. Does the bridal store also do alterations, where they could guarantee you their seamstress will have you dress altered ASAP and could put you as a high priority since they had to send back the dress? If not, call your seamstress and let them know the situation so they can schedule your alterations. It seems that unless a dress is having major changes made, the standard alterations are fairly fast and can be done within that timeframe.

Wow. That is not acceptable. Report that behavior to the BBB and make sure to post honest reviews on all platforms warning future brides. You have every right and reason to be upset.

I am so sorry about this poor customer service you have experienced.

I would write to them and set out the facts (i.e. that it was a rush order, you mentioned the urgency of the dress arriving on time etc, them not telling you about a minor issue with the dress) and how much of an inconvenience and expense their conduct will cause you and that if they do not come to a reasonable agreement regarding a solution that you will be left with no choice but to leave a poor review reflective of your experience and that you will consider escalating the matter to applicable consumer rights bodies.

So stressful. But breathe! My alterations were done in like a week. I found a seamstress that works out of her home. I was shocked at how fast the turn around time was. So alterations are still possible. Begin calling around now to find someone and let them know of the situation. Easier said than done but try not to stress. I don’t know if I missed this. Do you still have your first dress. Can you get alterations to that as a backup?

Call around and make it clear to the seamstresses that you talk to that your wedding is end of august and you need someone that can do the alterations in a few days, and thus can prioritize your dress.

As someone else said, your best bet will be to use the alterations services at the salon you are buying your dress from, if they have it. My dress does not come in until August 19 and I leave for my wedding September 8, so I’m kind of in the same boat as you and yes, very nervous— but the bridal salon stressed over and over that they could accomplish the alterations I need and want in that time frame, but I would need to be available to come in every evening of the week it arrives.
Obviously going this route, you should not need to pay any surcharge for the short timeframe.

Unfortunately they don't offer alterations in their salon so I'm screwed there. I am calling places today to see if I can find a seamstress to do my dress in a short period. Im pissed about having to most likely pay rush fees and I will be talking to the salon about some sort of money back because it's their fault it's late.

Find a local seamstress and let them know the situation now. I have someone local that's doing my dress and alterations and she's amazing. I had to get a bridesmaid dress slightly altered and she just did it while I was there so I didn't have to drive back again.

First, to the OP I am so sorry. This is awful and unacceptable.

I will second this suggestion to find a local seamstress and frontload them with what is happening. I ended up getting a reception dress for my wedding because I gained a tiny bit of weight during Covid and my original dress was a bit tighter than I wanted for dancing. She was able to do the alterations to my second dress in just a week (I just needed the side seams taken in and some hemming). It's worth a shot!
