Penny in the shoe

MrsBest2B, on August 2, 2015 at 4:18 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

Is this an Irish thing? I've never heard it til now and I know Tina has offered to send it to some brides here but I'd never thought I needed it. FH is part Irish (his mother was from Southie in Boston) so it would be cool to incorporate that for him. Don't really know much about it though.

    The original poem was:

    Something old,

    something new,

    something borrowed,

    something blue,

and a silver sixpence in her shoe.

I had an actual silver sixpence in my shoe. However, even in the UK, the sixpence is obsolete. (They've gone to a decimal currency, in which coins come in 5 pence and 10 pence, not sixpence.) And they stopped being silver in 1920. So many people now use a penny instead of a sixpence.

As 2d bride says, it's just the end of the poem. I didn't have one and remembered as my DOC was beckoning me down the aisle...luckily we got one just in time, and I stuck it in my bra since my shoes were open toe.

I really waned to stay traditional so I got mine off ebay and it's an old sixpence from back when they were still silver. You can look on ebay and etsy and find quite a few if you really want to go that way, but obviously it's more money than the $.01 of just grabbing a penny. I love mine because it's a love token which basically means it has a name hand engraved on it (from times when money was short and people didn't often buy jewelry so they would do that instead and just wear the coin). It already had a hole drilled so that was easy and I just put it on an anklet to wear. I didn't want to put it in my shoe as it was uncomfortable to me and based on my shoes I thought it would fall out.
