Pearls and superstitions

jennifer, on February 27, 2017 at 11:18 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 38

Has anyone heard it's bad luck to wear pearls if they aren't your birthstone? My future mother in law told me her mother told her that. What other superstitions have you heard that don't make sense?

I have a co-worker who says she never wears pearls because "they make you cry". I've never heard anything more ridiculous. I absolutely love pearls.

Ha its a common superstition that pearls in your engagement ring bring tears. I think its phrased "Pearls for Tears" which has expanded over the years to stuff like what your FMIL said. What's really funny about it is that pearls have been linked with purity and love and marriage back to the Greeks because back then wearing pearls were thought to protect you from the tears of the gods. I think it's totally fine to wear pearls on your wedding day, I will be!

There is an old Italian superstition that you should not wear gold to your wedding... after you are married its ok, but before, no go! something about bad luck... I don't really get it.

@Roman Holiday-Interesting about the Italian gold superstition. My FSIL's rabbi said that to her, which was a custom nobody has ever heard of prior to the wedding. Her dress has gold beading though. Oh well.

Eta-@OP, did you google this superstition about pearls?

Never heard that about pearls. I've heard it about opals though. I think she has them mixed up.

I think my Nana told me pearls were bad luck unless they were your birth stone, and to never wear them. I remember being little and being worried for women who wore pearls lol.

In terms of days of the week, Saturdays are apparently bad luck for weddings. Which is not great news for the 90% of weddings that happen on Saturdays.

Although I don't believe in superstitions, I do sometimes find myself mentally tallying up the good luck vs bad luck things that I am doing.

Never hear of it... I will be wearing a pearl bracelet as my fiance gave me a pearl set when we got engaged. I also don't care about superstitions normally

The superstition that I heard most growing up was if someone sweeps your feet with a broom you wouldn't get married.

    I've never heard this.

FWIW, my grandmother had a beautiful pearl pendant necklace that she got from her mother to wear on her wedding day. The necklace has since been loaned to all the women in my family for their wedding. It has brought good luck to all!

    Superstitions are weird.

That being said, at least I'm safe on the pearl front since they really are my birthstone haha

I didn't google it I just thought it was odd. My fiancée hates pearls and I haven't decided what way I'm gonna go yet. I do love a pearl necklace so once I get my dress I'll know

I have never heard of anything bad about wearing pearls. Opals are supposed to bring bad luck unless you were born in October. This held true for me. My opal earrings were stolen. I was born in July.
