Pear Shaped Body. Why hide it???

Amanda, on July 25, 2018 at 11:08 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
So I'm short (5'3") and have a pear shaped body. All of the advice I read on "dresses that are best for pear shaped girls" essentially say to hide your curves. Hide the hips. No fitted material around the best curves mother nature gave you.
Well why the heck not??? I just don't get it. I mean, I get that they're trying to "balance" your figure. But why not show off the hips /and/ accentuate the girls to try to even out your figure?

I know I can pick any type of dress that I feel looks good on me, but this is something that has always just baffled me 🤷‍♀️

Hi Amanda! Welcome to the WeddingWire Community! Smiley ring I would totally ignore any type of recommendations like that and flaunt your beautiful curves! Do not feel compelled to hide any part of your figure to align with an "ideal societal image!" Smiley smile

If a woman likes her curves, she should dress the curves. However, some women are uncomfortable with the size of their hips or boobs or arms. Nothing wrong with that. They may want to find a dress that doesn't accentuate what they don't like.

    To each their own.

I would definitely suggest trying on a variety of dress silhouettes. We constantly hear that brides go into the store with a dress in mind and leave after purchasing something completely different. All that matters is that you are comfortable and love your dress!

If I had the body I had 10 years ago I would have gotten a dress to show off my pear shape! Now I have a belly that I want to hide Smiley laugh

I am plus size and I was positive that I wanted something that would flow away from my lower half. So all of my selections were A-line close to a ball gown, but I wasn't happy with them. My stylist was amazing. She excused herself and came in with a modified-A that was cut so close to the body I thought I'd hate it, but it looked amazing. It hugs my curves without being skin tight and doesn't add unwanted volume.

This is just society trying to enforce a narrative that women need to appear as thin as possible in order to look good. My fiancé LOVES my booty (I am pear shaped too) and I have a dress that shows off all of my curves. That being said, you should wear a dress that you feel comfortable and beautiful in, and not listen to what all those bridal magazines and articles say!

I read that too when researching silhouettes, and honestly, it just infuriates me. I went in to my first appointment expecting that I would need to wear an A-line (which I hate) instead of a fitted dress (like the ones I saw online and loved), because of all the "advice" I read everywhere. And when I walked out in an a-line silhouette, I thought it looked terrible on me and gave me no shape whatsoever. But I ended up loving the way every mermaid or trumpet dress looked on me, and the way they highlighted my waist and the curves of my hips.

You don't have to have a specific body shape to look bridal enough for any type of dress. If you want to show your curves off and wear something fitted on your wedding day, you will look gorgeous doing it! The perfect silhouette for someone's body is the silhouette they feel most comfortable in- whether that's ball gown, a-line, sheath, mermaid, etc.
