Paying friends?

Ellissa, on August 20, 2019 at 10:31 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 17
We have a friend who is going to be the officiant in our wedding. Should we pay him or tip him? He hasn't asked for money and I know he won't, but I wasn't sure if you're SUPPOSED to.

I think a gift would be a nice gesture and plenty to show your gratitude. My brother is officiating our wedding and we'll do a small gift and also paid for him to become ordained.

Does he officiate weddings for a living, or did he get ordained to do yours? If it's his job, you should pay him. If he's doing it as a favor just for you, I would give him a nice physical gift.

FHs best friend is our officiant- we've agreed that we're going to repay him for his costs to be officiated. My FH is also treating him as a groomsman and getting him the same gift as the others.

I would give him some kind of thank you gift, like a gift card to a nice restaurant or hotel or something.

I would give him a very nice gift or a gift card. Money may be weird. But you should definitely get him something to express your gratitude.

I agree that giving him money could be awkward, but I think something practical would be good - as said above, a giftcard to a restaurant he likes would be great

I actually had the same question! he is a friend of mine and already said he won't take money. I was thinking a bottle of his favorite vodka with gift card or maybe (he is a musician) a nicer gift that is music related.

I agree with the others that a gift would be best to show your gratitude! We treated our officiant - my boss - to dinner and gave him a nice gift as well.

Thanks for all the advice guys! A gift it is! I can’t believe I didn’t think of that 🤦🏽‍♀️ He is already ordained for another friend he did it for.

I wouldn't necessarily "pay" him but you should give your officiant a Thank You card with gift cards, movie tickets or whatever they would like/use.

Money may be a little awkward.

Our friend does this as one of his many jobs, so we will be paying him. He is offering us his "friend discount", though.
