Paying for dress appointments rant

Cristina, on March 4, 2023 at 8:16 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13
This is a pure rant. I apologize in advance.
I’ve found 5 places to dress shop- based on collections they have. When I finally went to book appointments I see 4 out of the 5 charge. Most are 50. One is 100. They all come with champagne and the higher one comes with snacks. I called to see if I can do walk in/ appointment with no alcohol or food and they said no- I had to choose from a package. I find this crazy. I just want two people with me, low key. I know the money comes off the dress but I’m spending 250 potentially just to look? I don’t know. Again- a rant!

I think that's ridiculous and obviously designed to discourage casual or comparison shopping. I didn't need or want champagne or food or large entourages and would have resented that.

That’s ridiculous and just a way to make more money and like the above comment, encourage you to go around and shop. Honestly I found my dress at one shop, not that that happens for everyone but in your situation I would try and do that if these are your only options. If these shops are not your only options, look for ones that you don’t have to pay even if you have to drive about an hour.

None of the shops that I visited required a fee, nor did they offer champagne or snacks. Just curious what area are you in?

I live in Philadelphia- but these shops are all on the outskirts.

Interesting. I’m in NJ. I would try branching out a bit.

I live in DC and was told by friends that this has become the norm. Most places here charge just like that. However, I only shopped for dresses in my hometown which is way more rural. There are no booking fees out there.

Yeah I’m going to look into places a little bit further than I originally was. Maybe I’ll do one of the places that charges.

Yeah I’m going to look at places a little further out. Maybe I’ll do one of the places that charge. But it’s still crazy. I do not need champagne haha I can do that after!

Major red flags. None of that is normal or ethical. Run far away and don’t go to any shop that charges for those things. I would be very shocked if a shop actually did that and it was considered the norm instead of the exception. If you have to, make a road trip to a local larger city to try on dresses.

Unfortunately this is the semi norm. I ended up finding places a bit further away. I am in a large city and looking in the outskirts. It’s a way they make sure they make money even if you don’t find anything.

$100? Just to set up an appointment? That’s crazy! Even with snacks! Snacks ain’t worth 100 bucks! My most expensive appointment was $50 which I thought was high. Most of the other ones were about $30. Wild.

They are charging fees because people will pay them. My suggestion? Don't pay them!

I agree with others. I wouldn't pay any amount of money just to try on dresses. I'd keep looking until I found a few places that didn't charge.
