Paying for cake tastings

So I have two cake tastings this weekend, one I have to pay $30 for. I have noticed that with some of the others I have looked at. For those of you who have already been to their tastings, how much cake do you sample, or do they give you that would warrant $30? How do all of you feel about how some...

For those of you who have already been to their tastings, how much cake do you sample, or do they give you that would warrant $30? How do all of you feel about how some cake makers charge you for the tasting?

Add on: Why are wedding cakes so dang expensive?! The average cake in my area with everything included is about $550, yikesarooney!

    Our cake tasting was complementary.

She brought 6 cupcakes made of the cake flavors we wanted to sample and had different frosting types to go with.

I can understand them charging a fee to make sure you are a serious buyer.

Also I think if you go simple on the decoration it makes the cake more reasonably priced.

We paid $192 delivered for our cake. It served approx. 100

Our tasting was free, I'll attach a pic of what we were able to sample. Our cake for 90 people is about 550. It was the most expensive one we priced out but is so worth it to FH and I.

We went to 2 cake tastings. One was free and the other charged $20. We ended up picking the one that charged a fee but we got to pick the flavors to try.

I just scheduled our tasting and it's free! We get choose 4 flavors/fillings of our choice. So excited! We already have our deposit down and we're paying $660 for 120-130 people.

I talked to one bakery that wanted $50 per person but if you chose them then that would go toward your cake price.

We are paying $5 each to try 3 different flavors we are interested in. If we go with her she will put $10 of it towards our cake. The cake itself is $200 and feeds 80. I think that's a hell of a deal but I also live in Iowa. lol

We only did one tasting with a bakery, they charged us $25 and we got a dozen cupcakes plus a thin slice of wedding cake to see how it's presented. I felt the $25 was totally fair for the amount of cake we got.

My cake lady did not charge for a tasting and gave us the option to pick 3 flavors for us to try, she actually added an extra one aside from the 3 we had picked. And as soon as you mention "wedding" anything they rack up the prices of everything. It's crazy!

I had one local bakery try to charge us $50 just for the initial consult. We quickly declined and found a better place with better business standards. Other places did not charge for consult and cake tastings were offered for free. Cakes around here run between $3.50 and $4.50 per slice.

    Free tasting here.

They set out 10 different cake flavors, and 8 piping bags with the different fillings they had, as well as the 4 flavors of buttercream they use. We basically were able to make our own cakes with all the combinations to find what we liked.

I'm pretty sure this is highly uncommon, but we were thrilled we had the opportunity to find exactly what we liked.

Ours charges $25 but that $25 gets applied to our wedding cake when you place the order. It was for 2 flavors and then $5 for additional. We knew exactly what flavors we wanted and since it was a unique combination we knew they made both of our samples specifically for us and that was worth $25. Both flavors were large enough to feed both FH and I comfortably. I don't think that's a bad practice since without it people could just get free tastings with no guarantee of booking the business. Honestly, wedding cake costs are the one expense I justify as worth their cost. It's soooooo much work and transportation alone is a nightmare. So bakers get their money's worth for sure with wedding cakes.

I have talked to some friends and one does cakes and I don't know why a tasting wouldn't be free. If food tasting is free I would think a cake one would be too

Paid 25 for tasting had 10 different cake flavors, 5 fillings, and 4 Buttercreams ... BUT we got the 25 back if we booked with them. I think it is reasonable to pay for tastings because they are using their products, time, and resources... it also secures that if you don't show up they didn't completely waste their time.

We paid for a tasting, which went towards our total bill. It was $25 if I remember correctly.

The cake lady who is doing mine said she charges 25 but will be taken from our cake price if we got her. She will be doing 4 tiers vanilla almond buttercream and my FH a 2tiers Italian cake and she also said for our one year anniversary to call her about a week before so she can make us a small cake for free. She charged us $600 when everyone is charging a arm and a leg or by the slice. All together my cake will be serving 200 and fh 60

If you're looking to save on the cake, I seriously recommend you consider an upscale grocers like Whole Foods or Publix. They can do a small decorated cutting cake and a larger sheet cake - it will cost far less than a big multi-tier thing.
