Is it customary to pay for an officiant's hotel stay when your wedding is out of town?

We are for the night of the rehearsal. Our officiant would have been invited as a guest anyway, so we're taking care of the night he wouldn't have been there.

The officiant has to travel 3.5 hours to our venue

If he chooses to stay the night that would be a wonderful gesture.

Yes then. Make sure your officiant CAN stay overnight; there's a rare weekend in June when I'm not too busy to do that, no matter how tempting.

We paid for our officiant's flight and hotel stay. He would have been invited to the wedding however we asked that instead of paying his fee could we just pay for his travel.
