Pay for cake tasting?

I was always under the impression tastings were free. I had two different bakeries request a $25-35 fee for the tasting that could later be applied to the cake is it typical?

    We went to three and only one charged. It was a only $10 and she made us individual cupcakes with filling in like a to go box. It wasn't a traditional bakery; she has a home studio. It was worth the visit and the amount. She's not going to credit it to our account but the flavors were so amazing! D.C. is a pretty big city and it's not the norm here.

    It really depends on the bakery. Some have complimentary tastings, others charge for it.
