Pay alterations or exchange a dress size down?

Kristen, on June 23, 2020 at 8:50 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20
Hello lovelies! My dress I picked up yesterday is the exact same size as the sample dress I tried on. My consultant said that the new dress will fit tighter as the sample dresses have been tried on multiple times and stretched out. When I tried on my dress before leaving the store I was worried that it was going to be very snug but actually according to the seamstress it's actually a little bigger than expected but it still fit me perfectly and zipped up perfectly. I still want to lose some more weight and the reason I considered the seamstress in the first place was to sew in some cups in lieu of a bra and she said as of right now I don't need it but if I lose just five pounds most likely I will need to add the cups because the dress will fit bigger. I'm thinking I would like to lose at least 10 to 15 pounds more and while the alterations to take it in at David's Bridal would be very affordable my question to you all is should I just exchange my current address for one size down or should I just stick what's my current dress and then if I lose more weight just pay for the alterations to get it taken in?

Exchange it for a smaller size if possible. No dress should be stretched so much that it falls off. The cost for alterations to the smaller dress will be less expensive than it will for the bigger one.

It always easier to take in, than take it out. I would stay with the size you have unless, you know you will lose the 10-15. Some people can lose weight easy, I am not one of those people 🤣

Stick with the one you have. You don’t want to exchange your dress because of weight that you hope to lose.

It's typically easier and cheaper to alter a dress down but it can get significantly more expensive to let a dress out especially if they would have to add fabric....that is a whole other layer of drama. I would stick with the size you have and closer to your wedding see if it needs to be taken in. Typically you buy a dress for the size you are now...not the size you want to be... My friend learned that lesson the hard way...she went a size down on her dress because she thought that would motivate her to lose weight...well she did lose weight...but she also built muscle and even though she was at her "goal weight" it did not translate to her "goal dress size" so her plan backfired and she ultimately ended up having to buy a quickie off the rack dress that she didn't love since they wouldn't have been able to match the lace and beading in time for her wedding....

Thank you. Oh the sample did not fall off and the new dress still fits well to where I do not need the cups. I was thinking to go down a size because I plan to lose weight. I was thinking if I lose weight I can get my current dress taken in but not sure if I should just get a smaller size. Smiley smile

Yeah that is true. I thought that too. I know I cannot become lax because I can gain weight much more quickly than losing lol. I have been going to the gym everyday and walking my dog on top of low carb living lol.

Yeah I thought that too, what if I do not lose the weight I want. Funny you mention the building muscle because I have been trying to tone up especially my back, arms and torso lol. Of course working on losing fat but that makes sense that the muscle gain could impact things. I am praying that it won't make the dress tighter lol.

I think I would exchange it! Alterations do cost a lot but then there’s no guarantees that you wouldn’t still need alterations either

$80 to take it down in alterations. If it were more I would have gone down lol. I do worry would I lose enough weight to fit well in the size down. I plan to but may not be as successful as I would like in the next 4 1/2 months lol.

I would say keep the dress you have and take it in when you manage to lose the weight. You never know how your body is going to be after the weight loss either - it might be easier to take it in versus making all of you fit into the smaller size. If it almost fits perfectly, I would just get the alterations based on where you are closer to your day!

You Should Keep The Dress And Have It Altered As Needed. My Dress Came In A Size 12, The Sample I Tried On Was A Size 8 And Super Snug. I Had Lost Weight And Am Still Doing So, But When I Picked Up My Dress It Was Already Baggy On Me. Id Rather Have A Dress Slightly Bigger Then Smaller-Its Easier To Take In A Dress Then Let It Out.

My dress fits perfectly right now, but given I have about 11 months to my postponed wedding and I have some health issues I need to work on, I'm trying to lose weight too. I'm keeping my dress and hoping for the best come alterations time next year. Given you want to lose a small amount of weight, I would say to keep the dress and let the seamstress figure it out. That way too you don't have to put a ton of pressure on yourself to lose weight.

Yeah that's what I thought too. There would be the pressure to lose weight which could be motivation but if I don't achieve it I am good since my dress fits. Good luck on your journey too. We got this.

Yeah that makes total since. I would be OK getting alterations as not as expensive as I thought.

Keep the dress! It fits now so even if you do lose weight, it’s probably minor adjustments. With weight loss there’s never a guarantee that it will come off, that it will stay off, and most importantly HOW your body will change ! My weight has recently fluctuated some, I’ve definitely lost a bit of belly fat and I feel great, maybe almost 10 pounds down. My clothes look better on me, haha, but I have NOT lost a size! My belly is down and my legs and arms are more toned but I’m certainly not ready for new clothes. I also think working out more has gained me some muscle weight. I’m happy for the progress I’ve made and I feel really good, but my dress size hasn’t changed. I think one of the worst things would be to be feeling really good and then to get into a new dress that was just too small and risk feeling crappy about myself because of it!

It is very easy to take a dress in, and it’s very common to do fit adjustments in wedding dress alterations anyway.
