Passport- Can you get stamps with a card? Or only with traditional passport?

Jessica, on June 1, 2019 at 12:23 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 18
Forgive me, but I haven't traveled out of the country since I was 14, so, FH and I are getting new passports for our honeymoon.

We want to get our passport stamped everywhere we go, so we can keep it like a momento and record of places we've been.

My question is, can we get our passport stamped if we only have the card instead of the traditional passport book?

I've seen several passport 'holders' for sale online that have like little books inside them. Obviously I know they can't stamp our actual card, but if we get these books and have them with our passport, will the customs office stamp these?

You need your passport book to fly out of states to another country.

I’m assuming this would depend on the country. There are actually some countries that don’t even stamp the book.

The passport card only allows land and sea travel to Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. You are very limited in the travel you can do with the passport card versus the book. While the book is more expensive, that is the better option to get due to the severe restrictions on travel with the card. See the comparison chart at the link below:

I'm aware of this, but were not flying. Were going on a cruise. I wanted to know if the countries would stamp a book that wasnt an official passport book.

I doubt it because the stamps are actually visas for entry into the country. I don't know if they would put the visa stamp on an unofficial document.

The whole point of passport card (besides being cheaper than regular passport) is to expedite things at boarders, by not having to be stamped, when you’re going to Canada, Mexico, Caribbean & Bermuda by land or sea. So no, as far as I know, boarder officers will not put a stamp in your passport card, just so you can have a memory. If you want stamps, you will need to get regular passport.

Also stamps are not given only for visas, as pp said. Stamps are given when crossing a boarder to another country & they include date you came in/out of that country.

The passport card is an actual card and is only good for cruise travel and border crossing between Mexico and Canada. It can also be used as a photo ID for proof of citizenship when starting a new job or applying for your marriage license. My FH and I each have both a passport and a passport card. Only the regular passport gets stamped. To give you an idea of its size, I keep my passport card in my wallet, along with my driver's license. They are the same size and shape.

It’s been a while since I’ve done a cruise, but I don’t think every port stamped passports anyways. They’re so busy processing so many guests in such a short period of time. The cruise companies I’ve been on though usually have a spot near the dock/ship for a photo with a sign with the name of each port, so you guys could just have that photo taken instead. 😊

We didn't might just do that! But I did check into the ports were going to. Apparently, at several locations, they only do stamps if you go in and ask for it at the immigrations or customs offices.

If you go on a cruise you probably won’t get any passport stamps. I’ve been on 6 cruises, never gotten stamps at the ports. Only at the airport, but even then a lot of places are automated now and don’t do stamps (have traveled to many countries around the world and am sad less do stamps)

I’ve been on over 12 cruises and they do not stamp your passport. I was a little sad when I found that out. I also flew to Aruba and they didn’t stamp there either.

Probably not? The “book” and stamp is your travel visa, not a fun little thing that they do. I would highly recommend looking into the possibility of you actually needing an actual passport. Like pp have said the card is really just Canada from my understanding.

Yes, places sell passport books, but this is really just something to put your real passport in. Not something to keep as a trinket.

I would strongly advise against making odd requests relating to visas with other countries to be honest.

I was an International Flight attendant for eight years....
Unfortunately, they don't always stamp them....or mine would have been completely full.
Depends on the country and how busy they are.
