Parking Situation

Christina, on January 12, 2022 at 10:21 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9
Our wedding venues have extremely limited street parking (it’s the city). Most likely, guests will have to use one of the many options of paid parking. Our reception venue also offers a valet service at a certain price per car. My question is: are we responsible for these costs? Not quite sure what the etiquette is for this situation. Maybe I’m over thinking it but any advice is appreciated.

If it's in your budget and you can find a way to cover these costs for your guests, that would be a super kind gesture! Or maybe provide a shuttle to/from the venue?

If you are not able to cover costs or provide shuttle, you will need to let your guests know logistics/cost of parking situation.

In my social circle it's customary for the bride and groom to cover the cost of parking for wedding guests, and to not do so would be a faux pas. We're also in a city with limited parking so we paid for the valet service at our venue which charged per car. It wasn't a big deal budget-wise because very few people ended up using it, since most guests wanted to take Uber/Lyft instead so that they could drink.

If you can afford it then it’s a very kind gesture. However if you can’t at least let guests know that they will have to pay for valet so they are prepared.

We are also having a wedding in the city. Our venue has a big paid parking lot across the street. We decided not to pay for valet parking. The way we are handling it is putting all of the transportation options on our website. I have suggested uber, let the guests know that there is parking but you have to pay for it, and put together public transportation options. Additionally, we plan on getting limos/transportation for grandparents so they don't have to deal with the city traffic. We are just being as transparent as possible.

I would pay for parking if at all possible, especially because it sounds like guests will be charged to park for both the ceremony and the reception. It's always better if guests don't have to pay for things to attend your wedding (barring things like airfare and hotel, which are commonly covered by guests).

If you can pay for parking go for it. If not, just make sure you're upfront with your guests so they can plan accordingly. I'd want to know about the costs before attending the wedding if I were a guest, but I wouldn't expect the couple to pay for my parking either.

I'm getting married at a restaurant by the beach so scarce parking as well. There is a valet option for like 7 dollars per vehicle. My fiance and I will be paying for our guests to park because we aren't having a HUGE amount of guests but that would totally be up to you.

So our reception venue is able to tack the valet pricing onto our bill for us if we like. I think we’re gonna go ahead and do that. I’m not sure the same will be possible for our ceremony site.l as it doesn’t have a designated parking area. If not, I’ll just be as transparent as possible and post the information on our wedding website. Thanks for all of the advice!!
