Parent gifts

Tilar Fifield, on July 1, 2019 at 10:14 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 2 20
What is everyone getting their parents for their wedding gifts? Are you and your FH only getting your own parents gifts? Or are you both getting each set of parents something? We would like to spend around $50 on each parent, any ideas?

We bought them for our parents together. We got pearl necklace for the moms and limited edition alcohols for the dad's

I think booze themed gifts are always easy for dads 🤣 I thought maybe personalizes flasks or whiskey glasses... maybe some whiskey stones? I just don’t want to get any of them something they wouldn’t actually use. I’ve thought about jewelry for moms, but we could also go the wine route.

We're having our photographer make two smaller albums with wedding pics, one for each set of parents

We are giving IOUs to the parents. We told them that once the professional photographs come in, they can pick their favorites, and we will get the a photo book through shutterfly. My mom also expressed she wants 2 prints: 1 of just me and FH and 1 of us with the whole family. I am assuming that FH's parents would like something similar. My mom was very excited when I told her that was going to be our gift (she was asking me about prints and such, so I just shared our intent with her).

FH and I will also be doing albums for both parents. We’ll probably also give them all something small but personal at the rehearsal dinner, like an embroidered handkerchief or something like that.

My parents are not around, so, they're obviously not getting anything.

However, his parents have been truly amazing. I really love them and they are just so awesome and supportive. I am having this made for them at easy canvas .com.

That is a good idea! I’ve seen lots of photo frames with thank you messages on them, but I didn’t want to do that because we would have to wait until after the wedding. Which didn’t make sense to me because their gift is supposed to be given on wedding day. But I like that idea!

I like the jewelry idea but I just don’t think either dad’s would use the cuff links. They don’t go to work in suits everyday so I think for my people that gift just doesn’t work. I wish it did, I’ve seen some really sweet ones!

Yea my dad wears them infrequently so I'm on the fence about it. His dad wears suits all the time.
I like the idea of fleece sweaters, our mum's are always cold and our dads take planes a lot so a nice little sweater is good for the airport or just chilling around the office or house.

I hope so because I have 0 other ideas. I also, like you, wanted to give to them on the wedding day, not after.

I think the photo book gifts are a great idea, I’m just looking for something I can give both sets of parents on the wedding day. I obviously can’t give them photo gifts if we don’t have them yet 🤪

I'm having the same problem! I was going to get them photobooks after, but wanted to do something small for the day of. Did you figure anything out yet?

I have not! I actually asked each set of parents what the other one would like and both of them told me we aren’t supposed to give them gifts...? Which confuses me because this seems to be somewhat of a hot topic. I did get my mom a little necklace and I was going to put a nice note with it. Haven’t figured out FH mom yet! But I think we will just get the moms something small for that day and then gift the parents together once our photos come back and all the craziness has died down.

My mom said the same thing! She said they never gave gifts to family members on their wedding day! Yeah, I'm definitely considering jewelry because I didn't want to get anything too expensive so that I can get a nicer photo book for them.

What about step parents? My parents split when I was 19. Dad remarried a few years later, and I get along well with his wife but we're not necessarily close, although she gives me gifts for most birthdays, holidays, and randomly (she likes to shop). Mom has been with her partner 10 years and they pretty much live together, and while I like him we've never been close. Do I get gifts for them too?
