Parent Gifts... Help me!

Taylor, on August 18, 2020 at 11:53 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

I've been struggling to figure out what to buy my parents as a thank you. I know everyone thinks their parent or spouse is the most difficult person to buy things for but I guarantee I win on this one.

Mom: Doesn't like candles, perfume, or anything that smells. Doesn't keep up with trends. Jewelry is tough because her weight fluctuates a lot and she has to constantly get resized for rings, bracelets, etc. Doesn't drink much... hates wine. Is a teacher. Likes margaritas.

Dad: Also not into trends. Occupation is ranching so he works from home. Hunts, but not so much as a hobby. Doesn't just love any particular sports team. Very into politics (Lord, help me) and active in his church where he wears a suit regularly. Doesn't drink much.

They don't really travel because my dad has animals to take care of on the ranch. Not materialistic AT ALL which is totally fine but it makes buying a gift for them really hard...

Any help would be so so so appreciated!

ALSO: Do I need to buy my FH's parent's a gift or should that be up to him?

I always choose something that they wouldn't buy for themselves and maybe have mentioned in conversations that they always wanted.

For my mom one year I bought a first edition of a book she loved growing up. She always spoke of this book and thought that would be a great gift.

No one knows your parents more. You could give both sets of parents a portrait of you and your FH

My parents pretty much buy anything they want so I made a collage of photos of me, my siblings and my parents throughout the years for my mom and I gave my dad a travel mug since he uses one every day for work. Is there something for your dad's work that he could use? Is there something like a photo collage or personal that your mom would like? For my grandmother's birthday this year I gave her a puzzle with a photo of her, my mom and I from my wedding. She loves to put together puzzles. Think of hobbies either of them have.

You can get your mom a necklace because that does not need to be resized. Or you could get her a personalized margarita shaker. Your father sounds like my kinda people lol. I would get him buck knife or leathermen (Both made in america and very hand when working on a ranch and hunting.) and have something engraved in to it. We got buck knives for out groomsmen and took them to a local jeweler to engrave them.

Have you considered a really nice frame and starting it with a printed engagement picture and then replace it with a special wedding pic when you receive yours? <From here on for special occasions you could print a photo to update the frame for them. Which may help other gift connundrums>

    An embroidered handkerchief.
If mom likes margaritas, she therefore likes tequila? So a nice bottle if she mixes her own? Or a good quality and/or engraved insulated tumbler.
I used an etsy store to custom make a sign for my parents home. I thanked them for teaching me Grit and Grace so that's the sign.
Also consider an insert for your dads tie too. It can be a message or a photo, but you stitch or iron-on the inside bottom.
In this case include a well thought thank you note, as your words may be the most meaningful gift of all.
I made sure to gift something from me as a future daughter in law to my future in-laws. It was a bottle of our favorite wine with a custom thank you label for raising such an incredible man.
    Best of luck! Sherri

BrthThe only traditional gift for parents at your wedding time, is the one they give you. And after the wedding, you give them pictures. ................
The recent TV and wedding industry fad is to give out presents every time you turn around. Proposal gifts for bridesmaids, gifts for those giving showers, engagement parties or personalized bridesmaid and groomsman stuff for parties, robes or shorts for getting ready, and any candles, soap or scent at any time, have never been associated with weddings before. Only one gift to each member of the wedding party is traditional given near the wedding at luncheon, dinner, RD, privately, or after the wedding. For other thank yous, write a nice, personal letter of thanks.

If you want to take the time to write a nice letter to each of your parents to say what they mean to you, that is great. Most will read it over and over. No one will stop you. You can hire a horse and carriage, and give a gift to the horse and driver if you insist. But the endless stream of gifts including parents are not necessary . Save the expense. Their birthdays, anniversary, mother's and father's day, and religious holidays, 4 times a year, are usual times to celebrate or give gifts to your parents. Your wedding is when you receive gifts, put on a party if you wish, and do BP gifts only once.

You can get them individual gifts like PPs suggested. Or you can give them a general gift suggested by PPs like gift cards. You can also give them an IOU for photos after the wedding. Pair it with a heartfelt card, and you're set!

My parents are also a pain to shop for. I gave them a family photo that I had professionally printed and framed. We don't have many pictures together as adults, so I used one from the last time we were all together and enlarged it for a living room focal point. His parents are even harder to shop for. He got them some nice coffee grounds because they always buy the cheap stuff for their daily coffee, and then an engraved whisky glass for his dad and engraved wine glass for his mom.

These gifts were inexpensive (used sale and coupon for framing) but personalized and meaningful to them individually.

I’d get custom cuff links for the FIL for his many suits and for FMIL a custom decanter for her tequila.

I feel you with this one... my in-laws are so hard to buy for! Maybe a personalized picture frame for each of them or as a joint gift? Maybe a nice tie for your Dad that he can wear to church or socks to wear on your wedding day (that match the wedding colors). Do they drink coffee or tea? A cute mug would be a nice gift as well, Etsy has so many nice things! You can also maybe get your mom and nice margarita glass or pitcher with glasses set.

We got both of our moms a glass frame with our wedding invitation engraved into it on one side, and an opening for a photo on the other. We’ll provide the professional photos for them when we get them. For my dad, I got him a frame with the lyrics of our father/daughter dance song surrounding the photo opening. For my husband’s dad, he got him a really nice engraved ice bucket with their last name. He has a bar at home a likes nice pieces for it. Everything came from Etsy. You can’t go wrong with some kind of wedding keepsake!
