Paint Pens or Sharpies for Wood Guest Book

Paige, on October 2, 2017 at 1:55 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 10

We are having people sign the wooden sign my Fiance proposed with! I thought this would be a fun "guest book" we could actually hang and use.

I can't decide if I should get regular sharpies or the oil based paint pens for the wood signatures! Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would use sharpies because the paint pens can get messy and difficult to use for the average person. They have a tendency to splat and it would be terrible to have that all over your guest's hands or your sign.

I think Sharpie's work fine on wood. Try writing something on the back of the sign in a Sharpie to see if you like how it looks.

Thanks y'all! Did you use black or white sharpies?

OP, we're doing something similar, and everything I've been reading says either A) test your pens out prior on the wood somewhere (maybe the back?) to make sure they don't bleed or feather and B) best defense appears to be wood that's really well sanded and then sprayed with some kind of acrylic coating to give a smoother writing surface. Then spray again after the wedding to preserve better.

I would recommend the silver Sharpies. They're basically paint; should show up on any surface.

Oil-based paint pens can also be accidentally smeared by the next person's hand. I'd stick with Sharpie.

We used paint pens on Jenga blocks and didn't have too many issues. The only one that comes to mind involves a friend with nearly illegible handwriting under the best of circumstances, so the paint pens didn't make much of a difference there.

We used colored Sharpies on non-varnished wood. Turned out fine. We're going to spray with a clear coat to lock the signatures in.
