Paging Centerpieces! Random questions about lace table runners and lemoncello

Bee, on June 1, 2016 at 6:53 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 15

ETA to add the page to Centerpieces based on a response below. None of these warrant it's own thread so here goes. 1. Is there a lemoncello brand you recommend? Have you bought bigger bottles and separated them into small bottles? Does that work without going bad? How far ahead would you separate them into small bottles. These are in the running for favors and I won't be making them myself. 2. We have round tables of 10 and would like a lace runner (can't afford an overlay) but can't tell what length size works best. We can't try it out in person as we don't have access to the a big enough table. It seems the tables are around 72 inches for a 10 person. Would you recommend a 72 inch runner (so it's just on top of the table), 96inch, or 108 inch. Obviously the higher I go the longer it hangs off the sides. We can't decide what looks the best. It's a barn reception if that matters at all.

Personally I would think logically the 72in make sense if there is no overlay. With 10 ppl at each table 2 people will have to sit where the runner is. Anything hanging down by itself might get caught. Just my logic of it.

Pallini is the only brand I've had of Limoncello, but there are a bunch of good ones. My family always has one in the freezer! I don't know about splitting them up into smaller bottles, I don't think this would spoil it though.

I don't remember my favourite brand, but I found this awesome graph telling you where many brands stand according to flavour:

Thanks Angela! I've personally never had it but FH is really pushing for them so trying to make it happen. I'll look into tasting pallini.

In my research about table runners (honestly, I invested way too much time and energy lol) you're supposed to have at least 6" on each side, unless it's a really short runner(like is kind of just in the middle of the table) But, I don't think it's the end of the world if there isn't overhang, if you don't want it.

The length of your table runner depends on the length of your tablecloth. If your tablecloth reaches the floor, then I'd go with the longest runner option. If using a shorter tablecloth, then either get the same length as your tablecloth or slightly shorter.

Ah, gotcha. I tend to like to look of every table runner style so wanted to get some opinions before I break any design etiquette. Thanks for the advice, everyone!

Not really an answer to your limoncello question but...

You can easily make your own - I've done it a few times as Christmas gifts. Giada De Laurentiis has a good recipe but there's multiple online (hers make it sound complicated but it's not!). It's super simple and much less expensive than buying. Basically you steep vodka over lemon peels for a few days, then mix in simple syrup (water and sugar boiled together), and voila! Limoncello.

I usually make it 2-3 months ahead of when I'm aiming to give it as a gift - that way the flavors have time to develop more in the bottles I eventually put it in. HomeGoods or Marshalls are good places to look for bottles. Or Amazon for bulk deals. Just make sure to invest in a funnel Smiley winking

Maybe I'll try making a batch soon. I'm not great in the kitchen so didn't want to risk it.

I would give it a try - it's quite simple, even for those who aren't the most cooking-literate Smiley smile

Get a vegetable peeler to get the peel off the lemons. Place those in a glass jar/bowl. Pour vodka over. Cover and steep for 3-4 days. On the 3rd or 4th day, mix together 4 cups of sugar and 5 cups of water - boil uncovered on stovetop for 5ish minutes (voila, simple syrup!). Let that cool while you strain the vodka/lemon peel mixture. Mix the lemon vodka and simple syrup together and then put into whatever you want to store it in! You don't have to refrigerate it.

My only recommendation is to use a somewhat good vodka brand - nothing in a plastic handle Smiley smile

Listen to Lindsay regarding the runner length. The runner needs to be longer than the table width and close to the length of the tablecloth. Shorter runners just look odd.
