Packing Tips

Samantha, on June 26, 2019 at 11:27 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 9

Hi All!

We are leaving for Ireland the morning after our wedding. This will be my first time ever traveling out of the US. I am wondering the best way to pack? Do I pack my main bag with all my stuff and have a separate bag for the night at the hotel with items I'll wear on the plane so I don't have to potentially unpack the main suitcase? Besides the basics, is there anything you would suggest for someone who can't sleep on planes and has an 8 hour long overnighter? I still have time to figure it all out but I am trying to find the smartest way to pack and not have a ton of stuff to tote around.

For our flight to Hawaii (two flights, ends up being 9.5 hours of flight time total) we are bringing our tablet with 3 movies downloaded in advance (or tv shows or whatever) to equal at least 8 hours. I also bring an external battery just in case. I always bring a headphone splitter and two pairs of headphones. We both bring our reusable water bottles FOR SURE! I'm wearing comfier clothes (not pajamas but a pair of jogger sweatpants & a tank top with a sweatshirt). I'm bringing comfy socks on the plane to change into, and we both bring neck pillows. I like to bring face wipes, so I can freshen up if I feel gross after all the travel. Southwest provides snacks & drinks, but I'll bring my own too (at least a few - probably things like gummy bars, protein bars, etc.). We both bring our phones obviously but with music downloaded and a few games! If you are a reader, a book would be great too!

Neck pillow!!! They seem silly but you'll be way comfier weather you can fall asleep or not. Definitely do what you said about having a separate bag. Maybe you can fit night at hotel stuff and plane wearing clothes on your carry on? It's always good to pack items that can be worn more than once. I would suggest rolling clothes to conserve space. Don't pack your bag all the way full because you'll bring back more stuff than you originally think!

I'd definitely keep the things you'll need the night before and on the flight separate from the rest of the items you'll be packing. Also, for trips involving flights, husband and I usually do a little "co-mingling" of our clothing, etc., so if one bag gets lost/delayed, we both still have a change of clothes or two in the other's bag. I've never been able to sleep on a flight, so I can't help you there. Regardless of whether you sleep or not, try to put yourselves on the time schedule of your destination as soon as possible -- even if it means you end up going more than a day without sleep. "An arrival nap" often does more harm than good in terms of your longer-term adjustment/jet lag. What an exciting trip!

Both times I went over seas the plan had complimentary moves built in to the seat behind them, but not the time I went to Hawaii. My flight on the way back from Germany was during the day and I watched 4 movies Smiley xd

Yes this is a great idea!! If you stay up 24 hours before the flight you'll have a slightly better chance of falling asleep. And like you said, arrival nap is totally allowed especially on a honeymoon!! What's more lovely than a really good nap Smiley heart

That's awesome! We just want to make sure we have our own movies ready haha so we didn't want to risk it! I've depended on flight movies or wifi before and been disappointed when the wifi stopped working or I had already seen a lot of the movies.

Definitely better to be safe than sorry. They don’t really advertise very well if there will or won’t be movies available and the WiFi is never great

Bring some snacks! I also recommend a neck pillow. If you've a portable phone charger that would be really nice to bring too.

If you pack your main suitcase ahead of time (and assuming you are checking the bag), make sure you leave enough space to add the full size toiletries that you may use the morning of your wedding and cannot be brought in a carry on/personal bag. For instance, a full size bottle of hair spray, or dry shampoo, mousse, body lotion, contact solution, toothpaste, etc. If it’s liquid or something canned over 3.4 ounces, it needs to get checked so just make sure you leave enough space in the big suitcase to throw them in a ziploc bag before leaving for the airport! Also for trouble sleeping, I take melatonin and use an eye mask, especially if it’s daytime or I’m near the window
