pa laws and humanist celebrant officiant

Mary Kate, on March 27, 2018 at 1:00 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 6

I am curious if anyone has any knowledge about the legality of using officiants from the Humanist Society, as reflected by the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

As far as I can tell, from my own county in PA, the persons allowed to solemnize marriages include: a current or retired judge from the commonwealth of PA or at the federal level, a PA mayor or former mayor, or a Minister, Priest, or Rabbi of and regularly established church or congregation; AND that every religious society can join people in marriage as long as one of the people getting married is a member of the society/organization.

According to the Humanist society, "Humanist Celebrants conduct Humanist, nonreligious, and interreligious weddings" ; I have noticed several officiants available to conduct such civil, unity ceremonies for people interested in going the non-religious route, but considering the outline of the law specifying "religious societies", I'm curious about the legality in PA, of having a Humanist celebrant when their whole focus is being a nonreligious-affiliated organization.

If there are any people with insight into PA law in this regard, I'd appreciate it.

Call the county you're getting married in. PA pretty much allows it up to the counties to determine who can preform/perform a marriage ceremony.

Totally creeping, but where you're getting married is gorgeous! My cousin got married there 2 years ago in the spring, and it was lovely. Lancaster county doesn't allow people ordained online to officiate ceremonies.

Omg I got married in Pa and my super atheist husband and I had to sign up for a fake church for a day because of how weird the laws are in my county.

It it really depends where you are

If I weren't a church member, I think I would go the retired judge route before falsely joining a church just to get married.

Thanks for the comments! I'm not joining a church or having someone do an online-ordination. I was mainly just curious about the humanist celebrants since there seem to be many performing weddings in multiple counties. I'll look into if there is someone who I might be able to contact in Lancaster (county where I'm getting married).

Thank you! I am so excited to be married there. I can't wait to see the winter evergreens. Spring in that area is also lovely and picturesque--so much green on the trees and a beautiful flowing river! I bet your cousin's wedding was beautiful.
