Oysters at a black tie wedding?

Meghan, on October 4, 2023 at 7:02 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9
My fiancé and I are having a black-tie wedding in 2025. He and his family are HUGE oyster fans and have an oyster station at every wedding. My mom does not think that oysters fit the vibe of a “black-tie wedding” and would be more appropriate if the wedding was more casual. Is this true? Has anyone ever been to a black tie wedding with oysters?

Please help! Mom is paying for the wedding if that makes any difference.

It may depend on your area, but I think of oysters as fancy so they’d be right in place at a black tie event. It may depend on how it’s set up, so you can talk to your caterer about how to set things up fancier.

Oysters are very common at black tie weddings (and other black tie affairs).

That’s tricky. Oysters have an elite vibe to them at the same time that they are very messy to eat, which doesn’t mesh with black tie attire. The dichotomy always exists because of that. If your caterer can find a way to serve them that doesn’t require the usual sucking them out of the shell which is what creates the mess, such as deep fried with dipping sauce as an example, then go ahead and serve them if that is what you want. Be aware that some people will not touch them, while being dressed to the nines, to avoid spills.

A friend recently attended a black tie wedding at a fancy hotel and they did have an oyster bar.

I had a black-tie wedding with a raw bar as one of our cocktail stations. It was a resounding success. Often Market Price seafood is costly and fluctuates depending on year, so be prepared for you and your partner to offer to pay yourselves if she's still adamant. But, really take her out to a white tablecloth steakhouse and order a seafood tower and show her it's not low-class.

Also, I personally have never dribbled on myself. But, napkins exist for a reason.

Oysters are fine to serve at a black tie event! It's not like you're planning to serve hot dogs, lol.

Maybe this is me, but make sure your caterer knows what they are doing because food poisoning from oysters is probably the worst form of food poisoning you can get. Like, I had them once on vacation as a teenager and I felt like I was going to die the next day which is pretty normal for them to have a delayed reaction. So yeah, again, definitely make sure your caterer knows what they are doing
