My fiance's grandfather surprised us with an early wedding present, a check for $30,000. We are moving right after the wedding and this helps us so much. I've been writing cards and sending them out as soon as we received gifts but I my question is for a gift this large, Is a thank you card...

Holy smokes! That's the whole wedding cost right there!

    I'd be overwhelmed too! Lol.

How wonderful! Both of you should call him right away to thank him. I think taking him out to dinner, or inviting him to your home, or bringing him some homemade food if he can't get out much would be well appreciated. I think most of all he'd love time with both of you.

UM what!!! How generous!!! I'd definitely do more than a thank you note. I agree with the 'taking out to dinner' thing, I mean how can you thank a 30k gift, thats more than some weddings. Do something very personal. Get something engraved maybe. I mean, WOW

We got an incredibly generous check from my in-laws shortly before the wedding. I wrote a long, heartfelt thank-you card and then put together a photo album just for them after we got our photos back. I wish we could take them out but they live so far away.

This is amazing!! What a blessing! Like PPs suggested do dinner and host something at the new house as soon as you're ready to have people over. A heartfelt card from you and FH would be a nice touch as well.

I would definitely invite them over for dinner or a meal (rather than going out) only because I wouldn't want to give the impression that I was spending the gift willy nilly ... a home made meal would be sentimental and show your appreciation.

You could do dinner and a nice framed photo of you both and him together!

I think with grandparents they really just want to spend time with you. My FH's grandma has been generous to us in the past and all she ever asks if that we see her every once in a while! Even a short or surprise visit goes a long way.

Wow!!! I agree with PPs...if you're able to, take them to a really nice dinner. I bet that spending time with you two is something he would love.
