Over-skirt dilemmas!

Sarah, on February 28, 2018 at 12:07 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

Okay I want to do a custom dress with an overskirt but I am having dilemmas on what shape dress for my bottom one to be!! I am between a tulle bottom mermaid, a more sleek mermaid, and a lace covered mermaid bottom. All dresses are on me so that helps show what the shape looks like on my body!! I also need to keep in mind how the overskirt would look above it. The overskirt will wrap 3/4 of the way and be open in the front. It will either be plain tulle, or tulle with lace details.

The middle dress is absolutely gorgeous, and I think would look best with an overskirt.

I'm doing the same thing and suggest you keep the bottom of the dress sleek/straight, otherwise it will look like too much going on. I'm not sure what volume you are thinking, but I'm using 2 layers of tulle, and the shop I got my dress at was able to pin a skirt from a different dress on to mine to show me how it would look. Another shop also had a detachable skirt from Casablanca (belt went all the way around), so that could be a good option to see as well. I would definitely recommend trying to do this though so you see what the end effect could be.

Out of the dresses you picked, I prefer the first and last though.

I think dress 2 would be the best suited for an plain tulle overskirt. Part of the point of an overskirt is seeing the underskirt. I feel like either 1 or 3 would be too similar to the overskirt and would be confusing and blend in too much. Part of combining an over/ underskirt is to have the contrast.

You would lose some of the back detailing of dress 3 by adding an overskirt. There's too much going on with the first dress for an overskirt. There's too much contrast from the dress body fabric to the skirt material. The overskirt would just add to the busy-ness.

Example 1Over-skirt dilemmas! 4The bodice and underskirt have similar styling with a different overskirt.

I think you should do #3 without an over-skirt. That dress is gorgeous by itself!

Do a more straight/sleek with the over skirt. I love dress #2 on you!

My dress has a v back like your number 3 and the overskirt is going to follow the silhouette by using buttons, so that could be an option for you. For 2 layers of tulle and be made for my dress it was $450.

I've only seen the sleek dresses under so I'm excited you have a trumpet and it lays well on top of it! Do you have a picture of the dress by itself?

THANK YOU! Thank you! Thank you! All the pictures I ever see are of sheath dresses or very minimal mermaid/trumpet so I was second guessing whether it would look good! But this confirms that a dress with more bottom shape would look good!

Since we have similar style I value your opinion. Would you do full lace or a tulle bottom? The other question is for the overskirt do I do plain tulle or lace covered?

Thank you! I also tried on a lace dress with the same tulle overskirt and loved it! I like how they complement each other. So I think if you do a full lace bottom, you should do a plain tulle skirt! But I also think a lace covered overskirt would also be beautiful with a lace bottom if the lace matches!
