Outdoor wedding in August - heat concerns.

Amanda, on May 21, 2013 at 2:48 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

So as most of you know, I was supposed to get married next June. We moved up the wedding date to this August because our grandparents are not doing so great health-wise. So now, we've got an outdoor wedding and tented reception in late August. What we've got going in our favor: a 5PM start time, and location on a point with a constant breeze.

Any ideas on how to keep myself from overheating? Anti-sweating tricks? I'm really worried that I'm going to be sweating buckets as I'm walking down the aisle.

Also, should I be doing more for my guests' comfort? The bar will be open for water service before the ceremony, and we're using program fans to help keep everyone cool. The tent sits right near the water, so it should have a breeze throughout.

Married ladies who had a summer outdoor wedding, how did you hold up in the heat?

Although the heat can be killer in august, sometime there are nice days, maybe you will luck out?

Any chance of talking to a rental company and seeing about some high powered fans? In case the breeze isn't quite enough?

The only thing I can think of is to keep your ceremony short and sweet. Hopefully you'll be able to wait somewhere with AC so you'll be fresh when you walk down the aisle.

@Tatiana, I am hoping and praying for an early fall like we got 1-2 years ago here in Maryland! One day it was 95 degrees, the next it was 75.

Fans are a good idea! I should ask the venue, maybe they'll have some we can use.

@Molly, we're planning a 20 minute ceremony so it shouldn't be too bad! And there's a guest house on site that has A/C. I can wait there beforehand and go there any time I need to use the restroom or just sit in the A/C for a minute.

Oh honey, I'm no help. I hate the heat and it's one of the reasons I'm getting married in winter. But I've attended plenty of summer weddings - as long as I have constant access to cold drinks I'm normally okay! The only summer wedding that I didn't like was at the end of July. The ceremony was at 1pm and the reception didn't start until 6pm and it was 106 degrees outside. I was so disgusting by the time I got to the reception all I wanted to do was go home and crash in the AC. But you're already starting much later, doesn't sound like you have a gap, and you're on the water- all good things!

@Julesieee, that's so funny because we hate the cold! When we were first planning, it was like "well it has be sometime from May-September" haha! Nope, no gap. Short ceremony, tented cocktail hour, then reception!

@Amy, I'm reallllly hoping so. Maryland is so hit or miss, weather-wise. Don't even make me say the h-word (rhymes with schmurricane) because I'm not even entertaining that thought.

LoL Amanda. What part of Maryland? I am up high in Frederick for ours and there is a nice uphill breeze to cool us down. But the humidity is what kills us all in MD. I think the fans are a good idea, I would do that too.

Rain? Nobody said rain! What's rain?

Bee, we're in southern Maryand. We've got the coastal breeze helping us out, but humidity is killer.

Oh boy, living on the coast of Louisiana (and getting married on the coast of Alabama/Florida) I didn't have much choice when it came to wedding dates. June is the start of Hurricane season that goes all the way until September-ish. then, you're getting into football season. (around here, we don't mess with our LSU games!) so I had to basically settle for May. I'm not sure if this is any help at all, but I plan on doing this at my beach wedding for a little shade for my guests.

I guess just keep hydrated and see if you can stand under shade? And here's a not so pretty trick : Deodorant not only under the arms, but under the boobs and your thighs.

I was going to suggest having your venue set you up with fans.

Another suggestion for you is make sure YOU stay hydrated.

    Can parasols be nautical?

LOL Jac-Jac. Perhaps I can arrange for a water ambulance to come get me when I inevitably pass out? As they take me away I'll be yelling "at least I stayed on theme!"

Amanda- Actually you'll be out in the sun the least time of all. Your guests will have been seated for a little while and you and your FH will leave first! However stay hydrated and maybe use some of the tips above.

The thing I see the most that concerns me on hot days is the strain on elderly guests. You may want to set up chairs nearby in some shade for those people and have them escorted to their seats right before the parents and BP.

Make sure your bridesmaids and your groomsmen are hydrated and not hung over as well as they will be standing in warm tuxes/dresses etc. After nearly 700 weddings I have seen bridesmaids collapse (locked knees, heat exhaustion) and groomsmen swoon because they had too much to drink the night before or that morning.

On the other hand, warm evenings for dancing the night away make it all worth it! Good luck and congrats!

Everyone is going to be paying too much attention to the awesome decor and nautical theme that no one will notice the heat.

You'll be fiiiiine. And if someone is complaining it's too hot they are annoying and should shut it. Smiley smile

I was going to say something along the lines of KC. My big worry would be your grandparents who you said were already in bad health. I wouldn't want them to have heat stroke to go along with it.
