Outdoor Wedding and DIY Tents?

Lacy, on April 21, 2010 at 11:49 AM Posted in Planning 0 5

So I was talking to my mom about my frustrations regarding finding a venue that a) is in our budget, b) will fit about 100-115 people, and c) will allow us to bring in food catered from a restaurant and not a "caterer." Mom asked me why we don't just have it at their house (they are back in their house and it isn't being foreclosed on anymore Smiley smile!). I told her I was worried about the heat since it would be in June, but that we could rent tents, but I think we could make them for less. My stepdad is pretty handy -- he used to weld together deer stands and was a welder for years before his health didn't allow him to anymore -- so he might be able to make the frames for some tents. What do you think? Is it more economical to make the tents or rent the tents? And do you think the tents would help with the heat for a June wedding in the south? My mom said she would check into it, but I just didn't know if anyone on here had had their tents made.

    Lacy,

I don't understand. If you're planning to bring in food from a restaurant, why can't you have the wedding in the restaurant? By the time you rent or build the tents, setup the fans, worry about the weather and the bugs, I don't see how you will save any money. Many restaurants will close down for the public for private events, especially on a Saturday afternoon. Or, perhaps they have an extra room that will fit 100-115 people. You can talk to restaurants who will not add on a room use fee, and just order the meals from their standard party menues.

In all honesty, unless you have someone experienced in this specific thing...it sounds a bit risky. What if the setting up the tent doesn't work out as planned, or it blows over on guests, or something of that nature? June in the south is pretty hot, but with fans, you may be okay. I think that Dan makes some excellent points.

I would try and google your butt off before you make the choice to build it. See what offers are out there for tent prices, I spent 2 days searching for a 20x50 tent to seat 100 guests, for our backyard wedding. We're in West Palm Beach, the place I found are in Miami... (hour and a half south of us)and I was able to book them for a 20x50 pole tent, 10 tables that hold 10 people per table, 100 all white chairs, and 10 table linens all for $750

@Tyler, yeah I realized that after doing some research. My rental company has a 40x60 pole tent for $975 or a 40x60 frame tent for $1050. I'm not sure which one would be better though.

@Dan, this particular restaurant only has a private room big enough for 30 people. And with the amount of business they get on the weekends, there is no way they would shut down for a wedding reception.

I seriously wasn't thinking about doing an outdoor wedding because of the heat, but since my mom made the suggestion I figured I could at least look into it. My budget is already at its max and this would put me over $1000 more. I guess I'm still at square one regarding a venue.
