Outdoor Wedding Acoustics- Bagpipes?!

Janet, on January 20, 2017 at 11:39 AM Posted in Planning 0 3

Hey everyone!! I am just starting to put together my plan for ceremony music, and I was wondering if anyone has had a bagpiper at an OUTDOOR wedding venue, and how that went. Did you have other musicians too? I only want the piper on the processional and recessional, so I want a string quartet for the rest. I am interested in orchestrating (pun intended) Highland Cathedral as the processional with a string quartet, but I'm wondering where I would position my piper. I think outdoor venues may have the potential to tone down the reverberation of the piper enough that it isn't overwhelming.. but I don't want to drone out the strings! I was thinking maybe putting the strings on a sound system, and positioning the piper a little further away from the crowd so he/she isn't so loud! Thoughts? has anyone else tried this?

Thank you!!!!

I had a bagpiper at my beach wedding and the sound was fine. It was loud enough.

I didn't have any other music with him though. He stood off to the side.

It depends on your venue. I can hear pipers at weddings at the venue near my house and it's a half kilometre away. However, it's also shaped like an amphitheatre.

Hi there! Our ensembles have performed with bagpipers (and actually have a quartet + piper wedding coming up in a few months)! If its just one bagpiper, he or she likely will not drown out your quartet! Smiley smile

We do always just remind everyone that when you have live musicians performing for your outdoor ceremony, always have a backup plan in case of inclement weather! Most professional musicians cannot play outside if its precipitating (even a little), or if they are not shaded from direct sunlight (particularly in the summer). Happy planning!
