Outdoor or indoor

Kelly, on February 4, 2022 at 6:10 PM Posted in Planning 7 11
Really struggling with whether to have the ceremony and reception outdoors or indoors. I’m looking at Southern California and so I think it’s pretty much warmer there year around than it is a lot of places in the rest of the country. Still there’s no guarantee that there won’t be wind or rain or excessive heat (in October this year it was in the 80s and for me and my mother that is too hot to enjoy much.) I’m just not sure what to do, but I feel like with Covid that is the smartest choice to avoid getting the event cancelled. I saw on many wedding venues reviews people having weddings all year round without concern so am I worrying too much?

You could always set up tents to help with rain/sun. Though I would prefer my wedding be completely open air (not even tents), we decided to go with them just to be safe

Where are you located? Southern California is a big place. In the LA/OC area, we don’t seen rain until December and it’s starting to cool off in October so you are fine for an outdoor wedding.

Thanks!! We are looking around either San Diego, or Temecula which is closer to family. Or Long Beach/Huntington. I am hoping for not hot but still warm enough for outside. Hoping to find a venue that can set up tent or umbrella in case too sunny etc .

October tends to be one of our hottest months as of late and a solid chance of Santa Anas. It’s really a crapshoot as to what weather you’ll get. I’d look at a venue with a large enough space for a tent and plan on that to help keep away any potential weather, should you need it.

We have a venue that's sorta outdoor-indoor. Meaning, it's an arboretum so the ceremony should be outside in the gardens and the reception is under a tent attached to their visitor building. The visitor building is the back up scenario in case of rain. Maybe you can also find a venue that should allow you to stay outside, but has some safe backup or maybe at least a roof like a pavillion? Good luck!

Trademark venues has a ton of options with I believe 4 to 6 different venues around Southern California ☺️ Mine is in San Marcos, CA called Green Gables Wedding estate. They offer both outdoor spaces and they have an indoor / outdoor beautiful reception space. It’s gorgeous and with a lot of covid precautions already in place.

I always thought I wanted outdoor...and my venue has a gorgeous outdoor cathedral. However, it's a hike up rocky terrain and the wedding is in the end of October. We decided indoors works better because we don't have to worry about cold and guests hiking that hill or bad weather.

With weather it's definitely harder to get an exact gage until it is closer to the time.

i live in socal and ive been to a reception outdoors here before in October! and it was nice. but i do want to bring up other issues that are related to having receptions outdoors that go beyond weather. e.g. depending on the environment like if it's dirt it can just be messier on the ground, insects, etc. there's also the OPPOSITE end of weather where instead of rain it could be hot and sunny

however i do see the pro is that being outdoor is preferred during covid times

Thanks for your thoughts! I’m so worried the governor will change rules and prevent weddings if not outside. And it’s pretty but yep, you just never know about weather, insects etc.

I REALLY don’t think he’ll change restrictions again. If we can host the Super Bowl with Omicron around, he’s not going to mandate anything against weddings. Honestly, I don’t think we’ll see such stringent restrictions like we did in 2020/early ‘21 again—governments need revenue generation too badly.
