Out of Towners invited to shower?

LCS, on January 31, 2014 at 9:48 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

Hi there,

I have a few close friends that live out of town (from Philly, all the way to San Francisco to Washington State) that are being invited to the wedding. I don't want to exclude them from my shower, but I don't want them to feel obligated to buy a gift. Then again, they might want to come. Do I invite them or not?

I had this debate too! I included close family and friends that were from OOT so they knew what was going on and felt included. For more distant people, I didn't send an invite because, like you, I didn't want to make them feel obligated to buy a gift. If they're close friends, I would invite them. If you're uncomfortable that it seems like you're looking for a gift, you could always ask the host to include a note that says something similar to "Wanted you to know we're thinking of you and would love for you to join if you can."

Send them an invitation, but also send them a text saying you understand that they live far away and will not be offended if they can't make it

I had this same issue. I did invite them. I also spoke with each and just kind of explained that I wanted them included as I feel that they are close to me. I said that I wasn't expecting anything (gift or the travel for this) and that just coming out to the wedding means a lot. It seemed to be received very well.

My opinion is - invite them and let them decide for themselves if it's something they can attend or not. At least they'll feel included.

I wouldn't exclude them. Send them an invitation, they may want to come! I have relatives who recently moved out of the country, and I'm sending them invitations to all the appropriate events, even though they already told me they're only coming to the wedding.

I'm not inviting the out of towners (or at least people who would have to fly) to my showers. But depending on your relationship with them, I think you should.
