Out of town gift registry.

Stephanie and Russ, on November 14, 2010 at 3:52 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

We live in Hawaii which is also the location of our wedding. We are getting married in May and my fiances job is moving us back to the mainland after the wedding. I'd like to register for gifts, but I think it will be too hard to accept gifts that we will just have to pack up and move anyway. I'd like to request gift cards or money, is this acceptable? And how do we do this?

By not registering, if anyone asks you could say we did not register as we have everything we need. That would send the same message.

I'd say is acceptable, especially if you explain why. But can't you arrange for the gifts to be delivered to your new place after you move?

Totally makes sense. check out www.depositagift.com it's perfect for what you're looking for. you essentially create a registry of what you'd like the money towards so that your guests still have the fun of picking you out something special, but you receive the money to spend as you're ready. really flexible and low stress. we're using them and it's been great. if you have a WW wedding website, they're listed in the registry area. personally, i'd stay away from gift cards. you either forget about them or you don't end up using them fully - so the store keeps that $$ you didn't use. plus then you're still sort of "asking" for them. vs with something like deposit a gift you're still creating a registry, and if you communicate it right, can help the gift giver really feel like they're getting you something important. then you just link to the registry from the registry page of your wedding website and it's really simple and natural, just like with a regular registry.

You could also do an online registry like say from amazon.com or something, or even i bet target does this.and you enter your address so it gets sent right to your house..that way you don't have to worry about packing it. Of course this would only apply to those guests who are online shoppers.

Do your parents live close to where you are moving? You could use their address for your mailing address on any registries.

I a using www.uponourstar.com a "wish" registry, it basically lets you select items for gifts, including things like honeymoon excursions, household stuff, etc, but you just cash out at the end. So far, it is working well for us, we have been registering for house stuff- like drywall and counters Smiley smile It would be a nice compromise I think, you can have things, but still get money in the end!
